Job Summary:

The Shipyard Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating cranes within a shipyard environment to facilitate the movement of heavy materials, equipment, and components for ship construction, repair, and maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate Electric, Hydraulic, and Friction Cranes: Safely and efficiently operate cranes to lift, move, position, and place materials, supplies, and equipment within designated areas of the shipyard.
  • Interpret and Follow Signal Instructions: Interpret and follow signal instructions from hook tender or other crane operators to ensure safe and accurate crane movements.
  • Inspect Crane Machinery and Equipment: Inspect crane machinery and equipment before operation to ensure proper functioning and identify any defects or maintenance requirements.
  • Adhere to Safety Procedures: Adhere to safety procedures and regulations at all times to prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to property or equipment.
  • Maintain Accurate Records: Maintain accurate records of crane operations, including the types and quantities of materials moved and hours worked.
  • Collaborate with Shipyard Personnel: Collaborate with other shipyard personnel, such as welders, riggers, and supervisors, to coordinate crane activities and optimize workflow.
  • Communicate Effectively: Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to report any issues, concerns, or incidents related to crane operations.
Requirements:
  • Education: High school graduate, GED or equivalent.
  • Experience: Proven experience operating cranes in a shipyard or similar industrial setting.
  • Skills: Knowledge of crane operation principles, techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to Interpret and Follow Instructions: Ability to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Effective Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • NCCCO Certified Crane Operator: NCCCO certification as a crane operator.
  • NCCER Certified Crane Operator: NCCER certification as a crane operator.
  • Flexible Schedule: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime as required.
