Home Start, Inc. envisions a world where every child enjoys a secure, stable, and nurturing environment. Our mission is to ensure the safety and resilience of children by empowering families and their communities. As a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and addressing child abuse, we have been a vital resource for families in San Diego since 1972.

We operate a variety of programs aimed at preventing homelessness, breaking the cycle of homelessness, and fostering self-sufficiency. In light of the increasing homelessness rates in San Diego, particularly intensified by recent global events, our initiatives are structured to make homelessness a rare, brief, and non-recurring experience.

Role Summary: The Intake Coordinator serves as the initial point of contact for individuals seeking assistance due to homelessness or those at risk. This role involves managing the housing department's intake communications, including phone inquiries and emails, while also overseeing program waitlists. The Intake Coordinator aids clients in navigating both internal and external resources, providing essential case management support and connecting them to appropriate services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the housing department's communication channels, including phone and email inquiries, and manage office hours effectively.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding available programs, assess client needs for services, maintain program waitlists, and guide clients through available resources.
  • Conduct immediate assessments of client needs and offer crisis intervention support.
  • Collaborate with other social service organizations to coordinate and refer clients to necessary mental health, medical, dental, and rehabilitation services.
  • Utilize community resources, including faith-based organizations, to enhance service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and documentation as required.
  • Provide client-centered navigation through services, adhering to evidence-based practices such as the housing-first model, progressive engagement, crisis stabilization, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care.
  • Participate in staff meetings, case reviews, training sessions, and supervision meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure comprehensive service delivery to clients.

Qualifications:

  • Covid-19 vaccination is required.
  • A degree in Social Services or a related field is preferred; relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements.
  • At least one year of experience working or volunteering with underserved populations is necessary.
  • Personal experience with the issues addressed by this position is considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of a background check via Live Scan is mandatory, as dictated by program requirements.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are essential.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity are required.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with strong problem-solving skills is crucial.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent reading and typing on a computer.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods during meetings or supervision.
