Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Certified Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Duke University Eye Center. As a key member of our eye care team, you will assist our physicians in performing diagnostic tests and procedures to evaluate patient eye problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preliminary screening examinations, including visual field tests, ocular motility tests, and color vision tests.
  • Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note any variations from normal.
  • Measure patient acuity, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision, and record findings on patient charts.
  • Obtain topographical measurements of the eye, including corneal diameter and curvature, and assist physicians in fitting patients with contact lenses.
  • Direct the flow of patients examined by our physicians, obtain medical and personal data for patient charts, and screen patients for conditions excluding ocular examination.
  • Administer Electro-retinogram, Electro-oculogram tests, and specular microscopy examinations to patients.
  • Calibrate and maintain all instruments used, including bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp, and tonometers.
  • Sterilize and set up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures, and assist with minor office surgery, laser treatments, and operating room surgery as required.
Requirements
  • Completion of Ophthalmic Technician training and certification as a certified Ophthalmic Technician by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
