Job Title: Attorney

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Montana Department of Corrections as an Attorney. As a key member of our team, you will have the chance to work on a wide range of policy and legal topics that impact our day-to-day work.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Attorney to join our team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to manage a general caseload, provide training and guidance to staff, and assist in the development of Department policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a general caseload of civil litigation and administrative litigation, from pretrial phase to appeal.
  • Provide training and ongoing guidance to new and existing staff through written and oral legal advice.
  • Assist in the development and promulgation of Department policies, procedures, and administrative rules.
  • Consult with and assist outside counsel retained to defend the Department.
  • Work in Helena, with the possibility of working in a different location if suitable office space and arrangements can be made.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Admission to the State Bar of Montana or admission within one year from the date of hire.
  • At least two years of experience as a practicing attorney is preferred.
  • Eligible to be admitted to practice in federal district courts, Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court, as required.
