Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Cancer Registry Program Coordinator to join our team at MedStar Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, registering, and maintaining records of all cancer patients, analyzing registry data, and disseminating information in accordance with professional ethics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives, adhering to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Comply with governmental and accreditation regulations, ensuring the highest level of data accuracy and integrity.
  • Assist researchers conducting cancer-related studies and research projects, providing guidance on the use of the Cancer Registry data system, including creating and preparing reports.
  • Work with the registry system vendor and IS to obtain data not available in the report writer, ensuring seamless data integration.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with physicians and patients to obtain follow-up information, meeting quality, timeliness, and productivity standards.
  • Coordinate activities of the cancer registry with those of the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board, developing criteria for patient care evaluations.
  • Abstract and assist Medical Staff in conducting PCE studies, collating information for reports, and creating statistical reports for medical and hospital staff or committees.
  • Meet annual deadlines for preparation of the annual report, ensuring timely and accurate data submission.
  • Establish policies and procedures for the unit, ensuring effective functioning of the registry.
  • Assist in developing, obtaining approval, and maintaining Medical Staff policies required for Accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).
  • Identify cases of malignant diseases, stage, and assist physicians with AJCC staging, abstracting, and coding.
  • Meet quality, timeliness, and productivity standards for abstracting and follow-up, as required by the Director.
  • Support Cancer Committee, Tumor Board, and other cancer conference activities, selecting cases for presentation, preparing agendas, minutes, and attendance records, and preparing data for distribution.
  • Prepare registry update reports as requested, ensuring accurate and timely data submission.
  • Represent the hospital in community outreach efforts related to the Cancer Program, participating in planning meetings and events.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Technology required, Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management preferred
  • 2 years related medical record or oncology experience, preferably in a hospital setting
  • RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification required, eligibility for RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) certification preferred, and CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) within 1 year of hire required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of various computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, data abstracting programs, and conventional medical record coding systems
  • Verbal and written communication skills
