Position Title: Senior Associate Architect or Engineer, Capital Projects
About the Organization:
The University of Tennessee System encompasses various campuses and institutes across the state, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin, and Pulaski, along with the Health Science Center in Memphis. This expansive network serves the educational and community needs of Tennessee's 95 counties, contributing significantly to the state's economic and social development.
Role Overview:
The Senior Associate Architect or Engineer will oversee capital projects primarily in East Tennessee, collaborating with multiple campuses within the UT System. This role involves managing projects from initial programming through to construction completion, while also assisting university leadership in the planning and execution of the Capital Program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and select architects, engineers, and contractors for capital projects.
- Provide ongoing evaluations and feedback throughout the design and construction phases.
- Coordinate design services and review project designs at each phase, including:
- Assessing and recommending payments for design service providers.
- Managing the bidding process for construction, including bid evaluation and contract award recommendations.
- Overseeing construction activities, including review of contractor submissions and shop drawings.
- Conducting field inspections, progress meetings, and resolving project issues.
- Managing substantial and final completion inspections, ensuring proper documentation and training for facilities management.
- Facilitating post-occupancy evaluations to gather feedback from building occupants.
- Assist in reviewing submissions for all capital projects.
- Coordinate project site selection for specific initiatives.
- Develop and evaluate facility programs for new and renovation projects.
- Support master planning efforts and updates for campuses, including facility assessments.
Qualifications:
Required:
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of five years of professional experience as a registered architect or engineer. Professional registration is mandatory.
The candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong technical expertise to identify and resolve potential project issues.
- Experience collaborating with external design professionals and contractors.
- Proficiency in design, project management, and construction oversight.
- Ability to manage multi-disciplinary projects effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with government officials and industry professionals.
Preferred:
Experience in facilities management within higher education is highly desirable.
