Description/Duties

The current recruitment will be utilized to fill openings at either the Correctional Facility Officer Trainee or Correctional Facility Officer level within the Mesa Police Department, contingent on work experience. This recruitment will also create Eligible Lists that may be employed to fill future openings. All positions are for the Transport Assignment.

The City of Mesa is pleased to offer a hiring bonus of $2,000.00 for this role. Half of the bonus ($1,000) will be disbursed after 30 days of employment, and the remaining half ($1,000) will be awarded upon successful completion of Mesa's Correctional Facility Officer training program.

First review of applications will be conducted on a specified date, with weekly assessments thereafter as necessary.

Correctional Facility Officer Trainee ($44, $66,070.16)

A Correctional Facility Officer Trainee acquires the full range of responsibilities of a Correctional Facility Officer through a structured, on-the-job training program in accordance with established protocols and requirements outlined in federal/state laws, City ordinances, and department directives. Responsibilities learned include: taking custody of inmates from arresting officers; processing inmates into the City jail by completing necessary documentation and forms; fingerprinting inmates; verifying the identity of individuals in custody and checking for outstanding warrants; escorting inmates to and from court and managing required paperwork; facilitating video arraignment court sessions for inmates; coordinating and communicating with other detention facilities regarding inmate transfer and movement; conducting field drug testing on substances found on individuals; processing evidence discovered on inmates; applying electronic monitoring devices to inmates per court orders; and facilitating the release of inmates according to established guidelines. A Correctional Facility Officer Trainee is tasked with ensuring the security and welfare of inmates, which involves providing meals and administering medication, as well as maintaining the detention facility. This position is responsible for performing related duties as required.

This is a civilian, trainee position that operates within the City's detention facility, which functions twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Training is delivered in an academy format and necessitates the acquisition and application of specific knowledge and skills pertinent to the booking, detention, and release of adult inmates. As training progresses, employees are expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment under pressure to maintain a secure and orderly detention environment. An employee in this role may be subject to verbal and physical abuse from inmates, required to conduct physical searches of inmates, and utilize appropriate legal force to restrain violent or combative individuals. Supervision is provided by a Detention Sergeant. An employee can advance to the classification of Correctional Facility Officer after successful completion of training and attainment of satisfactory performance evaluations. Employees in this position work rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. This classification is FLSA nonexempt.

Correctional Facility Officer ($47, $69,388.18)

A Correctional Facility Officer performs essential duties in managing a twenty-four hour/day City detention facility in accordance with established protocols and requirements outlined in federal/state laws, City ordinances, and department directives. Responsibilities include: taking custody of inmates from arresting officers; processing inmates into the City jail by completing necessary documentation and forms; fingerprinting inmates; verifying the identity of individuals in custody and checking for outstanding warrants; restraining and monitoring inmates; transporting inmates to and from the county jail and other law enforcement agencies; escorting inmates to and from court and managing required paperwork; facilitating video arraignment court sessions for inmates; coordinating and communicating with other detention facilities regarding inmate transfer and movement; conducting field drug testing on substances found on individuals; processing evidence discovered on inmates; applying electronic monitoring devices to inmates per court orders; and facilitating the release of inmates according to established guidelines. A Correctional Facility Officer is also responsible for the security and welfare of inmates, which involves providing meals and administering medication, as well as maintaining the detention facility. This position is responsible for performing related duties as required.
A Correctional Facility Officer has successfully completed the structured training program required of a Correctional Facility Officer Trainee. The work necessitates the application of specific knowledge and skills relevant to the booking, detention, and release of adult inmates. Work is performed under the supervision of a Detention Sergeant; however, incumbents often operate without direct supervision and are expected to exercise independent initiative and judgment in maintaining a secure and orderly detention facility. An employee in this role may be subject to verbal and physical abuse from inmates and is required to conduct physical searches of inmates and utilize appropriate legal force to restrain violent or combative individuals. A Correctional Facility Officer works rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. This classification is FLSA nonexempt.

Transport Assignment: One of the responsibilities of the detention facility and its staff is the transportation of inmates to and from the county jail and other law enforcement agencies. This assignment requires a Correctional Facility Officer Trainee or Correctional Facility Officer to carry a firearm, complete additional training, and maintain firearms qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications Required: Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. A minimum of one year of public contact experience. Transport Assignment: Incumbents are required to complete Armed Civilian Transport training within one year of hire date and must complete and maintain firearms qualifications.

Special Requirements: Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph is required. Candidates receiving a conditional job offer will be required to successfully complete a psychological evaluation. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date. Transport Assignment: Required to pass a more detailed psychological evaluation.
Substance Abuse Testing: Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment/pre-placement and random alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

Preferred/Desirable Qualification: Employment experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, corrections/detention officer, or military experience.
