Description/Duties

The current recruitment will be utilized to fill positions at either the Correctional Officer Trainee or Correctional Officer level within the Mesa Police Department, contingent on relevant work experience. This recruitment will also create Eligible Lists for future openings. All positions are designated for the Transport Assignment.

The City of Mesa is pleased to offer a hiring incentive of $2,000.00 for this role. Half of the incentive ($1,000) will be disbursed after 30 days of employment, with the remaining half ($1,000) awarded upon successful completion of the City’s Detention Officer training program.

Initial review of applications will occur on a specified date, with subsequent reviews conducted weekly as necessary.

Correctional Officer Trainee ($44, $66,070.16)

A Correctional Officer Trainee acquires the full range of responsibilities of a Correctional Officer through a structured, hands-on training program in accordance with established protocols and regulations set forth in federal/state laws, City ordinances, and departmental directives. Responsibilities include: taking custody of detainees from arresting officers; processing detainees into the City detention facility by completing necessary documentation; fingerprinting detainees; verifying the identity of individuals in custody and checking for outstanding warrants; escorting detainees to and from court and managing related paperwork; overseeing video arraignment sessions for detainees; coordinating with other detention facilities regarding inmate transfers; conducting field drug tests on substances found on individuals; processing evidence discovered on detainees; applying electronic monitoring devices as mandated by court orders; and facilitating the release of detainees according to established guidelines. A Correctional Officer Trainee is responsible for the security and well-being of detainees, which includes providing meals and administering medication, as well as maintaining the facility. This position is responsible for performing related duties as assigned.

This is a civilian, trainee position that operates within the City's detention facility, which functions continuously throughout the week. Training is conducted in an academy format and necessitates the acquisition and application of specific knowledge and skills related to the booking, detention, and release of adult detainees. As training progresses, employees are expected to demonstrate the capacity to work independently and exercise sound judgment under pressure to maintain a secure and orderly detention environment. Employees in this role may encounter verbal and physical abuse from detainees, are required to conduct physical searches, and must utilize appropriate legal force to restrain violent or combative individuals. Supervision is provided by a Detention Sergeant. Employees can advance to the classification of Correctional Officer upon successful completion of training and satisfactory performance evaluations. Employees in this role work rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. This position is classified as FLSA nonexempt.

Correctional Officer ($47, $69,388.18)

A Correctional Officer performs essential duties in managing a 24-hour City detention facility in accordance with established protocols and regulations set forth in federal/state laws, City ordinances, and departmental directives. Responsibilities include: taking custody of detainees from arresting officers; processing detainees into the City detention facility by completing necessary documentation; fingerprinting detainees; verifying the identity of individuals in custody and checking for outstanding warrants; monitoring and restraining detainees; transporting detainees to and from the county jail and other law enforcement agencies; escorting detainees to and from court and managing related paperwork; overseeing video arraignment sessions for detainees; coordinating with other detention facilities regarding inmate transfers; conducting field drug tests on substances found on individuals; processing evidence discovered on detainees; applying electronic monitoring devices as mandated by court orders; and facilitating the release of detainees according to established guidelines. A Correctional Officer is also responsible for the security and well-being of detainees, which includes providing meals and administering medication, as well as maintaining the facility. This position is responsible for performing related duties as assigned.
A Correctional Officer has successfully completed the structured training program required of a Correctional Officer Trainee. The work requires the application of specific knowledge and skills related to the booking, detention, and release of adult detainees. Work is performed under the supervision of a Detention Sergeant; however, incumbents often work independently and are expected to exercise initiative and judgment in maintaining a secure and orderly detention environment. Employees in this role may encounter verbal and physical abuse from detainees and are required to conduct physical searches and utilize appropriate legal force to restrain violent or combative individuals. A Correctional Officer works rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. This position is classified as FLSA nonexempt.

Transport Assignment: One of the responsibilities of the detention facility and its staff is the transportation of detainees to and from the county jail and other law enforcement agencies. This assignment requires a Correctional Officer Trainee or Correctional Officer to carry a firearm, complete additional training, and maintain firearms qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications Required: Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. A minimum of one year of public contact experience. Transport Assignment: Incumbents are required to complete Armed Civilian Transport training within one year of hire date and must complete and maintain firearms qualifications.

Special Requirements: Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph is required. Candidates receiving a conditional job offer will be required to successfully complete a psychological evaluation. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date. Transport Assignment: Required to pass a more detailed psychological evaluation.
Substance Abuse Testing: Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment/pre-placement and random alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

Preferred/Desirable Qualification: Employment experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, corrections/detention officer, or military experience.
