POSITION OVERVIEW

The Student Support Specialist is responsible for overseeing the behavior and safety of their designated student by implementing behavior modification strategies, adhering to school regulations, and following The Foundation Schools' established protocols. This role involves accompanying the assigned student throughout the school day to assist with academic tasks and behavioral objectives. The Specialist is also tasked with maintaining accurate records of the student's activities and progress. Working closely with the classroom instructor, the Specialist helps to execute lesson plans and Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Additionally, the Specialist contributes to team efforts by participating in meetings and special projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Accompany the assigned student during school hours, monitor their activities, and document their progress; ensure all necessary electronic and paper records are maintained regarding the student's behavior and academic performance.
  • Assist the assigned student in reducing and avoiding inappropriate behaviors through effective behavior management techniques.
  • Be aware of the student's diagnoses and academic performance; adjust interactions to support the student's IEP requirements.
  • Support the assigned student with both individual and group assignments; collaborate with the teacher to implement lesson plans and encourage the student's active participation.
  • Exhibit a fundamental understanding of various academic subjects to assist students with their coursework.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with all students.
  • Reinforce classroom expectations and standards for participation and behavior; promote student engagement and ownership in the learning environment.
  • Provide constructive feedback to teachers and school leaders to identify student needs and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Contribute to a safe and engaging learning atmosphere; assist in preparing classroom materials and performing clerical tasks.
  • Facilitate student transitions between classes, during lunch, and at arrival and departure times.
  • Understand how disabilities affect student behavior and learning; adapt intervention strategies to meet IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) requirements.
  • Manage student behavior effectively by implementing school policies and modeling appropriate conduct.
  • Identify potential crises or disruptive behaviors proactively; apply effective management techniques to minimize disruptions.
  • Ensure the safety and security of students at all times through vigilant supervision.
  • Uphold student confidentiality in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation techniques to manage student behaviors; apply appropriate interventions during crises as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent is required.
  • Preferred qualifications include related coursework or an Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in special education or a related field is preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) are advantageous.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment and complete reports using various software.
  • Capable of light lifting and carrying supplies.
  • Exhibit professionalism in interactions with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Collaborate effectively with others and maintain a strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrate time management and organizational skills.
  • Respond effectively to crisis situations using critical thinking.
  • Possess the physical capability to support program needs and manage student behaviors.
