Position: Internal Organizer

About SEIU Local 521: Established in 2007, SEIU Local 521 emerged from the collaboration of five local unions across the Bay Area, Central Coast, and Central Valley, uniting to form a robust and influential organization. Role of the Internal Organizer: The Internal Organizer will engage with members across various organized jurisdictions within SEIU Local 521, representing a diverse array of clerical, blue-collar, professional, and service workers in both public and private sectors, including healthcare.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, recruit, and cultivate stewards, officers, and leaders.
  • Lead initiatives to develop strategic plans for workplace campaigns addressing specific issues such as public budget matters, contract negotiations, and safety concerns.
  • Create and assist in establishing communication channels; draft and edit materials such as leaflets, proposals, and newsletters.
  • Facilitate or support contract negotiations, from initial proposals to strike readiness.
  • Oversee stewards and officers in their representational roles, including handling grievances and disciplinary actions, ensuring follow-through as necessary.
  • Adhere to timelines and procedures related to labor agreements, union bylaws, and organizational policies.
  • Encourage active participation in political advocacy and lobbying efforts, holding elected officials accountable.
  • Engage in and lead residual organizing campaigns, actively recruiting new members.
  • Guide staff members or community-based committees, serving as a spokesperson.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Willingness to travel frequently and for extended periods within the local's jurisdiction as required by assignments.
  • Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • A strong dedication to social and economic justice, with a commitment to organizing the unorganized through the labor movement.
  • At least one year of experience as a full-time external organizer or equivalent experience in community or rank-and-file member organizing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong listening abilities.
  • Capability to develop and implement detailed organizing strategies.
  • Ability to build rapport and organize workers from diverse ethnic, social, economic, and occupational backgrounds.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to prioritize effectively amidst multiple important tasks.
  • Strategic thinking skills and adaptability to rapidly changing situations.
  • Basic computer proficiency and a willingness to leverage technology as needed.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and harmoniously within a team.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred but not mandatory.

Additional Requirements: A valid California driver's license is required; candidates must pass a DMV check and maintain a good driving record; auto insurance covering business use is necessary (minimum coverage of $100,000 per person, $300,000 per incident for bodily injury liability, and $100,000 for property damage); possession of a vehicle for business purposes is also required.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. SEIU Local 521 offers comprehensive benefits, including fully employer-paid family health, dental, and vision insurance; a generous leave policy; a fully employer-funded defined benefit pension plan; a 401(K); flexible spending accounts for health and childcare expenses; a $200,000 life insurance policy; and additional benefits as outlined in SEIU 521 policies.
