Position Overview

As a High School Science Educator at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with colleagues across the network to equip students with the essential tools and knowledge to engage critically in scientific disciplines and foster their development as independent learners. Our Science curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning, focusing on student discourse and scientific practices. Educators will utilize diverse instructional strategies to ignite a passion for scientific inquiry and analysis among students. We aim to prepare all students to pursue and excel in any STEM field, cultivating them into informed citizen scientists capable of engaging with scientific concepts, regardless of their future academic or career paths.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Delivery
  • Teach a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level coursework.
  • Enhance students' skills in questioning, modeling, explanation construction, data analysis, argumentation, and conducting interactive laboratory experiments.
  • Create a classroom environment that encourages students to express their ideas and engage in scientific discussions.
  • Facilitate student-led discussions where evidence is used to support claims and synthesize and critique arguments.
  • Guide students in exploring various scientific topics through inquiry-based learning and project-based tasks.
  • Collaborate with the Science department to set academic and engagement objectives for students.
2. Data-Driven Instruction
  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessment trends.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners in your classroom.
3. Fostering School Culture
  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and heard.
  • Collaborate with families to provide necessary resources that support their child's educational journey.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Engage in weekly school-wide meetings to promote community, model core values, and support student achievement.
  • Work with your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Teacher certification is not mandatory for consideration in NJ, but candidates must meet state certification eligibility requirements.

Compensation: The starting salary for this role in Newark ranges from $59,000 to $83,000, influenced by factors such as relevant experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. We value staff tenure and do not impose salary caps for current employees.
