Position Overview

As a High School History Instructor at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with fellow educators to guide students towards becoming independent learners. Our instructors are passionate about their subject matter and possess the ability to motivate and inspire high school learners. History courses are designed to amplify student voices and cultivate global citizenship through a focus on textual analysis, analytical writing, and meaningful discourse. By the end of high school, students will be well-prepared for academic independence and college-level coursework.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Duties
  • Deliver a curriculum that emphasizes the analysis of World History, U.S. History, American Government, and Economics, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate studies.
  • Facilitate student-led discussions on historical topics, encouraging engagement with open-ended questions, peer debates, and synthesis of arguments.
  • Guide students in understanding authors' claims and the significance of sourcing while developing skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through the analysis of primary and secondary sources.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel empowered to express evidence-based opinions and perspectives.
  • Collaborate with the History department to establish academic and engagement objectives for students.
2. Data-Driven Analysis
  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to review and respond to trends in student work and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for diverse learners in your classroom.
3. Cultivating School Culture
  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and heard.
  • Collaborate with students' families to provide appropriate resources that support their child's educational needs.
  • Participate in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Engage in weekly, school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement.
  • Work with your grade-level team to set academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Teacher certification is not mandatory for consideration at Uncommon Schools in NJ, but candidates must meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position in Newark ranges from $59,000 to $83,000, depending on various factors including relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. We value staff tenure and do not impose salary caps for current employees.
