Position Summary:


A Clinical Laboratory Specialist operates under the guidance of a certified medical technologist, pathologist, or Medical Director in a CLIA accredited laboratory environment.

This role involves utilizing both automated and manual methodologies to assess and analyze biological samples, including cells, blood, and other bodily fluids. Responsibilities encompass the collection and processing of samples such as blood, tissue, and urine from patients. Samples are meticulously prepared, analyzed, and reported using both manual techniques and advanced automated systems.

Educational Requirements:

Essential Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
Completion of a Clinical/Medical laboratory technology program

Desirable Qualifications:


A Bachelor's Degree with three years of relevant clinical laboratory experience or an Associate's degree with four years of relevant clinical laboratory experience, along with one year of training in a Medical Technology CAHEA accredited program.


Key Competencies:

  • Capability to perform as a medical laboratory technician in a moderate complexity laboratory setting. Effective verbal and written communication skills with colleagues and other healthcare staff are essential.
  • Ability to successfully complete a color vision assessment as mandated by Employee Health. Technologists must notify Laboratory Administration if there are changes in vision that could affect testing accuracy.
  • Comprehensive understanding of laboratory techniques, tests, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in executing procedures that require sound judgment with minimal oversight.
  • Skill in identifying abnormal results or testing issues and discussing them with the Technologist, Supervisor, Manager, Physician, or Medical Director.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and good communication skills.
  • Competence in recognizing and addressing equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to instruct and communicate effectively with medical, para-medical, or lay individuals.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage workflow efficiently.
  • Excellent decision-making capabilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in high-pressure situations.

Licensure and Certifications:
State of Florida technician license - MLT (ASCP), MLT (AMT), or MLT (AAB) in Hematology and Chemistry is required. Additional subspecialties beyond Hematology and Chemistry are preferred.

Preferred Certifications:
National certification from ASCP, AMT, or AAB is preferred.

Experience Requirements:

3-5 years of experience in a clinical or medical laboratory setting.
