Position: Genomics Research Scientist
Location: North Chicago, IL
Compensation: $30-37/hr
Contract Duration: 6+ months
Overview
- Randstad Life Sciences US is seeking a skilled Genomics Research Scientist to join our esteemed Genomics Research Center (GRC). This center excels in genetics and genomics, supporting both discovery and development efforts. The primary aim of the GRC is to cultivate exceptional genetics and genomics research that identifies optimal therapeutic targets, enhancing our understanding of human disease biology and drug responses in clinical trials across various therapeutic domains.
- The Functional Genomics team within the GRC specializes in genome editing and CRISPR technology, focusing on the discovery and validation of innovative drug targets for our therapeutic pipelines in Immunology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, and Neuroscience. We employ state-of-the-art genomic methodologies to convert human genetics data into actionable drug targets and to elucidate pathogenetic mechanisms. Our approach includes high-throughput functional genomic screening in both in vitro and in vivo preclinical models, utilizing diverse molecular and phenotypic readouts. We prioritize patient-centric models and develop tools using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) derived cell types, conducting hypothesis-driven research for target validation and mechanistic studies.
- This role presents an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic Scientist to collaborate with a team of geneticists, molecular and cellular biologists, and computational biologists. Candidates should possess extensive laboratory research experience utilizing cell and molecular biology techniques. Open communication and a spirit of inquiry are crucial. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment and manage multiple research projects concurrently. Weekend and holiday work within the lab may be required, along with administrative and managerial responsibilities comprising up to 25% of the role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine cell culture tasks to maintain and expand cell lines, including induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
- Facilitate the differentiation of iPSCs into specific cell types of interest (e.g., retinal cells, immune cells).
- Engage in CRISPR/Cas functional genomics research utilizing lentiviral and RNP delivery methods.
- Contribute to cross-functional target identification and validation initiatives to bolster early drug discovery in immunology and ophthalmology.
- Develop cell-based functional assays pertinent to disease biology.
- Execute arrayed and pooled CRISPR screens employing fluorescent cell sorting and high-content imaging assays.
- Collaborate extensively with scientists across various functional and therapeutic areas in a matrixed research setting.
- Effectively communicate and present project designs and findings to stakeholders in both individual and group settings.
- Perform routine managerial duties within the lab, including coordinating maintenance schedules and liaising with facilities to sustain operations.
Qualifications:
- BS, MS, and/or PhD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- BS with 5+ years of laboratory experience, MS with 2+ years, or PhD with no prior experience in a laboratory setting, either in industry or academia.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in in vitro cell culture, aseptic techniques, and the development of cell-based assays is required.
- Experience in flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and/or protein assays (e.g., ELISA, Western Blot) is expected, with a minimum of 1 year.
- Familiarity with transfection, nucleofection, and viral transduction is advantageous.
- Experience in immunology, neuroscience, and/or ophthalmology research is a plus.
- Knowledge or experience with CRISPR systems is beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and apply them in a fast-paced research environment is essential.
- Creativity, problem-solving abilities, organizational skills, and attention to detail are expected.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills are critical, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
