Job Summary

The Clinical Informatics Lab Specialist is a key member of the University of Maryland Medical System's informatics team, responsible for delivering value-added healthcare informatics and technology to support the organization's strategic plan and achieve clinical, financial, and service quality objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, development, and implementation of effective laboratory workflow, operational processes, and system functions to drive optimal outcomes and efficiencies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assess, redesign, and continually improve the effectiveness and productivity of clinical laboratory and business programs.
  • Anticipate and identify complex clinical and business processes and informatics issues, monitor and measure risk factors, and communicate them to informatics leadership and stakeholders.
  • Manage projects to ensure the implementation of continuous quality control of processes and deliverables.
  • Build and maintain effective networks with other IST team members, internal and external subject matter experts, and support innovation in healthcare practice, care delivery systems, and healthcare business and laboratory operations.
  • Advocate for solutions incorporating organizational goals and objectives to Medical System stakeholders, identify implications of external environment for the organization and service lines, and meet with stakeholders to review solutions and issues.
  • Facilitate key stakeholder discussion and response to issues impacting laboratory practice, care delivery, and business and revenue cycle, and lead multidisciplinary groups toward solutions.
  • Identify barriers to change, accept and manage ambiguity/complexity, and visibly involve in obtaining customer feedback, incorporating customer requirements into service design, and advocating for technical solutions to laboratory clinical and business processes.
  • Provide support and coaching to stakeholders in effective process analysis and improvement techniques, and use data to assess and improve unit performance.
  • Participate in multiple aspects of electronic health record development and implementation, laboratory training development and delivery, go-live and elbow support, testing activities, reporting, business and clinical needs prioritization, and coordinate and conduct Enterprise and local testing of software updates/fixes and routine maintenance.
  • Develop, facilitate, and coordinate training plans to implement new technology within the laboratories and associated clinical areas, and provide analysis and advanced support, including troubleshooting, system monitoring, and the installation and maintenance of software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Informatics, Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related science and/or a combination of education/experience.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Where applicable for Clinical Roles, clinical licensure in the State of Maryland, or eligibility for licensure due to Compact state agreements is required.
  • Informatics or Relevant Industry Certification recommended.
  • Where applicable, achieves and maintains relevant Epic or EHR application certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, basic computer concepts, knowledge of microcomputer operating systems and application software required.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with all levels within the organization.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills required.
  • Strong leadership experience highly desired.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to advise and consult with user personnel and make formal presentations of project findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical customers required.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail-oriented skills required. Excellent organization skills; demonstrates confidence and creativity.
  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and flexible based on changing business and training environment needs required.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment required. Develops effective working relationships and maintains excellent communications with other team members.
