Clinical Informatics Specialist

Job Summary
The Clinical Informatics Lab Specialist plays a critical role in delivering value-added healthcare informatics and technology to support the strategic plan of the University of Maryland Medical System. This position is accountable for designing, developing, and implementing effective laboratory workflow, operational processes, and system functions to drive optimal outcomes and efficiencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assess, redesign, and improve the effectiveness and productivity of clinical laboratory and business programs.
- Anticipate and identify complex clinical and business processes and informatics issues, monitor and measure risk factors, and communicate them to informatics leadership and stakeholders.
- Manage projects to ensure the implementation of continuous quality control of processes and deliverables.
- Build and maintain effective networks with IST team members, internal and external subject matter experts, and support innovation in healthcare practice, care delivery systems, and healthcare business and laboratory operations.
- Advocate for solutions incorporating organizational goals and objectives to Medical System stakeholders, identify implications of the external environment for the organization and service lines, and meet with stakeholders to review solutions and issues.
- Facilitate key stakeholder discussion and response to issues impacting laboratory practice, care delivery, and business and revenue cycle, and lead multidisciplinary groups toward solutions.
- Identify barriers to change, accept and manage ambiguity/complexity, and visibly involve customers in obtaining feedback and incorporating requirements into service design.
- Provide support and coaching to stakeholders in effective process analysis and improvement techniques, and participate in multiple aspects of electronic health record development and implementation.
- Effectively use, apply, and communicate data and information from multiple sources affecting Medical System programs, and direct stakeholders in applying information to changes at the hospital and service line level.
- Coordinate and conduct enterprise and local testing of software updates/fixes and routine maintenance, develop, facilitate, and coordinate training plans to implement new technology within laboratories and associated clinical areas, and provide analysis and advanced support.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Informatics, Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related science, or a combination of education/experience.
- Three years of related experience.
- Where applicable, clinical licensure in the State of Maryland or eligibility for licensure due to Compact state agreements is required.
- Informatics or relevant industry certification is recommended.
- Where applicable, achieves and maintains relevant Epic or EHR application certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, basic computer concepts, knowledge of microcomputer operating systems and application software.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with all levels within the organization.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership experience is highly desired.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to advise and consult with user personnel and make formal presentations of project findings and recommendations.
- Ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical customers.
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail-oriented skills are required.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment is required.
