About the Position
The University of Florida is seeking a highly qualified and experienced academic leader to serve as the Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Horticulture. As a key member of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), the successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and vision for the department, fostering a culture of excellence in teaching, research, and extension, and promoting the department's mission to improve the human environment and protect the natural landscape through the intentional and scientifically based use of plants.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for the department, aligning with the IFAS mission and goals.
- Foster a culture of excellence in teaching, research, and extension, promoting the department's mission and values.
- Develop and implement departmental programs, policies, and procedures, ensuring alignment with university and IFAS goals.
- Lead and manage the department's human and financial resources, ensuring effective use of resources and achieving departmental goals.
- Represent the department and IFAS in various forums, promoting the department's mission and values, and building partnerships with external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement departmental programs, ensuring a culture of inclusivity and diversity.
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring effective use of resources and achieving departmental goals.
- Provide leadership and guidance to faculty and staff, promoting professional development and growth.
- Engage with external stakeholders, including industry partners, government agencies, and community organizations, to promote the department's mission and values.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in horticulture, plant science, agronomy, or a related field.
- Record of outstanding scholarly achievement and professional activities related to teaching, research, extension, and/or industry.
- Experience in academic leadership, including department chair or similar roles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to lead and manage multidisciplinary programs, promoting collaboration and teamwork.
- Experience in budget management and financial planning, with ability to develop and manage departmental budgets.
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with ability to promote a culture of inclusivity and respect.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in grant writing and management, with ability to secure external funding for departmental programs.
- Experience in program evaluation and assessment, with ability to develop and implement evaluation plans.
- Experience in faculty development and mentoring, with ability to promote professional growth and development.
