Job Summary

The University of Florida seeks a distinguished academic leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Environmental Horticulture. The successful candidate will provide vision, support, and coordination in planning, developing, and implementing departmental programs in teaching, research, and extension. This includes leadership in recruiting and fostering academic growth and professional development of faculty, staff, and students, as well as administration of the department's human and financial resources. The Chair will also promote external funding opportunities and foster shared governance, evaluating faculty and staff performance, and encouraging the proactive development of strategic programs. Additionally, the Chair will represent departmental and faculty interests with administrators, other departments, and units, and outside agencies, individuals, and groups in natural resources, industry, and communities.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership in planning, developing, and implementing departmental programs in teaching, research, and extension
Lead and manage multidisciplinary programs
Administer the department's human and financial resources
Promote external funding opportunities
Foster shared governance and evaluate faculty and staff performance
Represent departmental and faculty interests with administrators, other departments, and units, and outside agencies, individuals, and groups

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a record of outstanding scholarly achievement and professional activities related to teaching, research, extension, and/or industry. They will also have the ability to direct an academic department engaged in teaching, research, and extension activities at a major Land-grant university with faculty, staff, students, and resources located throughout the state. Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrated ability to direct interdisciplinary, grant-funded fundamental science and applied research, as well as effective administrative leadership and managerial skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate student recruitment and retention for all academic programs in environmental horticulture. They will also have demonstrated ability to interact well with students, faculty, staff, administrators within the university, and external stakeholders at the state, federal, and international levels. Furthermore, the candidate will have effective leadership in outreach to industry and engagement with varied groups, as well as a commitment to shared governance and fostering strong collaborations among state faculty located on the main campus and at the IFAS Research and Education Centers.
