This newly created role will assist in accommodating an additional veterinarian joining our team.

Our facility is designed with the well-being of pets and our medical staff in mind. We take pride in being AAHA-accredited and implementing fear-free practices daily.

As a multi-doctor establishment, we offer a comprehensive range of services for small animals, including surgical procedures, dental care (with radiography), internal medicine, emergency services, and critical care. We prioritize preventative health measures, which encompass wellness check-ups for puppies and kittens, annual evaluations, and dental health awareness. Our team is composed of passionate professionals who strive to make each day enjoyable and productive.

Position Summary

The Veterinary Assistant is essential in supporting veterinarians and veterinary technicians, ensuring the health of pets, educating clients, and upholding the highest standards of veterinary care. This role will also involve assisting our surgical team.

Key Responsibilities

Main Duties Include:

  • Exhibit proficiency in technical skills acquired through education and experience, including surgery, dentistry, laboratory procedures, venipuncture, and proper restraint techniques, while adhering to established protocols for maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Contribute to the daily efficiency and smooth operation of the hospital.
  • Utilize excellent communication skills to engage effectively with team members and clients.
  • Maintain accurate medical records for all patients, consistently meeting quality control standards.
  • Educate clients about Wellness Plans and provide guidance on pet care and health.
  • Share responsibilities for select reception duties, including answering calls, scheduling appointments, and managing patient intake and discharge.
  • Gather relevant medical history and patient information.
  • Assist in managing hospital supplies, including inventory tracking and restocking.
  • Ensure completion of all assigned duties before the end of each shift.
  • Act as an advocate for the overall success and performance of the hospital.

Customer Service Excellence

  • Deliver professional, efficient, and exceptional service consistently.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills when interacting with the veterinary team and clients.
  • Adapt effectively to individual client needs.
  • Resolve customer complaints appropriately.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to OSHA standards and regulations as outlined in company policies.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Ability to:

  • Enhance and acquire new veterinary technical skills, including proficiency in anesthesia, surgical assistance, and dentistry.
  • Work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain composure and resilience under pressure.
  • Exhibit proactive initiative in addressing tasks and challenges.
  • Complete work with a high level of accuracy amidst constant interruptions.
  • Learn new software systems (EMR, Scheduling, etc.).
  • Demonstrate a high level of accountability.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Handling dogs, cats, and exotic animals.
  • Providing basic animal care, including feeding, grooming, and monitoring for signs of distress.
  • Common medical procedures, such as administering medications and assisting with diagnostic tests.

Demonstrates

  • A strong customer service focus while adapting to individual client needs.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage various emotional situations with empathy and compassion.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 6+ months of experience in the veterinary field.
  • Completion of an NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • This position is performed onsite at our hospital or at approved offsite events. Remote work is not available.
  • The hospital environment includes limited space, pet-related odors, and noise.
  • Schedules may include 10+ hour shifts and shared Saturdays.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to lift 45+ pounds are required.
  • Able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed.
  • May be exposed to pets that may bite or scratch, biological hazards, and various medications.
