Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Civil Engineer to lead our Waterways Control Section. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the design, construction, and maintenance of our waterway facilities, as well as supervising a team of engineers and technicians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer the design and preparation of contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates for waterway facilities.
  • Monitor and inspect District construction activities and materials for conformance with established criteria.
  • Coordinate the resolution of construction problems and investigate construction claims.
  • Oversee the Waterways Control Section, including canal operations, debris removal, water quality monitoring, and two-way radio communications.
  • Coordinate the preparation of technical studies and reports to evaluate process and/or equipment feasibility and the application of alternative technology to District facilities and procedures.
  • Oversee the preparation of budget documentation and the monitoring of expenditures.
  • Direct the procurement of right-of-way easements and permits, and oversee surveying and mapping operations.
  • Coordinate with design, construction, maintenance, and operations personnel, regulatory agencies, labor organizations, and developers to accomplish the operating and engineering contract objectives of the District.
  • Present recommendations regarding strategic planning and oversee the implementation and maintenance of computer technologies.
  • Assign, supervise, and review work, ensuring staff compliance with district policies and procedures, including Personnel Rules and Administrative Procedures.
Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in chemical, civil, environmental, sanitary, or structural engineering.
  • Eight years of full-time, post-degree civil engineering experience, with four years in work related to the District's activities, three years in the supervision of degreed engineers, and one year in an administrative capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Full-time graduate study in the designated fields of engineering may be substituted for the required non-specialized experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
Working Conditions

The typical office environment may involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities and heavy equipment, and may require exposure to a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
