Position Overview:
Vast is seeking a Senior Engineer specializing in Propulsion Systems, who will report directly to the Director of Haven Propulsion. This role is crucial in the development of systems necessary for the design and construction of human-rated artificial-gravity space stations.

This is a full-time, exempt position based in our Long Beach facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, analyze, construct, and evaluate propulsion thrusters, fluid components (such as valves and instrumentation), tanks, and fluid systems tailored for spacecraft serving space stations.
  • Take ownership of critical spacecraft propulsion hardware and systems, assuming significant responsibility for their performance.
  • Collaborate with a top-tier production team to ensure effective implementation of designs into spacecraft.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, or physics.
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical or fluid design, analysis, or manufacturing (including relevant student projects and internships).

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Advanced degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, or physics.
  • Extensive knowledge of spacecraft and/or launch vehicle propulsion systems and fluid components.
  • Experience with CAD software such as NX 8.5, PTC Creo, or CATIA, along with a solid grasp of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) as per ASME standards.
  • Strong understanding of compressible and incompressible flow principles, thermodynamics, mechanics, materials, and electrical circuits.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software tools like FEMAP or ANSYS, along with a solid understanding of fatigue, fracture, and crack propagation.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing techniques and processes related to metallic and fluid systems, including machining and welding methods.
  • Proficient in working with aerospace materials, including metals, plastics, and composites.
  • Solid understanding of testing methodologies and data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to conduct trade studies using engineering fundamentals to make informed recommendations.
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space sector and human spaceflight.
  • Strong collaborative skills, capable of working effectively within a team environment.
  • Highly self-motivated with excellent organizational and communication skills, able to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:
