The Department of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School is seeking a highly skilled Advanced Practice Provider to join our team in the Division of General Internal Medicine.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with patients with sickle cell disease and a strong background in clinical care.

The selected provider will participate in all aspects of patient care, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, as well as providing education and support to patients and families.

The clinical practice will focus on the care of patients with sickle cell disease in the hospital and outpatient clinic, with the opportunity to provide primary care to all types of patients.

The responsibilities of the position include:

  • Independently assessing, diagnosing, and developing treatment plans for patients with sickle cell disease and primary care patients
  • Promoting a schedule of health promotion examinations and interventions
  • Obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and prescribing medications under a collaborative practice agreement
  • Differentiating between normal and abnormal findings and ordering appropriate diagnostic studies
  • Providing anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients and families
  • Documenting patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generating outgoing correspondence
  • Initiating and coordinating referrals to other healthcare team members or agencies
  • Serving as a consultative resource to nursing staff
  • Participating in the development, utilization, and evaluation of resources to meet patient and family educational needs
  • Providing education to external agencies, community, and other healthcare professionals
  • Participating in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment, improvement, and research programs and processes
  • Monitoring task module of the electronic health record to ensure timely response
  • Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals
  • Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge
  • Participate in professional nursing activities in the division, community, and professional organizations
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents, and the public

The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies, and be licensed as a Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Experience working with patients with sickle cell disease, chronic pain management, and cardiovascular disease is preferred. Knowledge of or experience working with electronic health records and intermediate word processing skills are also required.

The selected provider will be located in Norfolk, Virginia, and will be part of a collaborative team dedicated to providing high-quality patient care.
