Clinical Laboratory Specialist

Position Overview:
The role is situated within the Core Laboratory of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration.
Key Responsibilities:
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is tasked with executing a comprehensive array of emergency, routine, intricate, and specialized testing procedures across various domains including Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Urinalysis, all while operating with minimal supervision.
Core Duties:
Responsibilities may encompass, but are not limited to:
1. Analyzing and making informed decisions regarding quality control specimens for all assays within the designated work area.
2. Applying knowledge of online quality control regulations to assess the ongoing performance of clinical assays.
3. Managing and reporting proficiency samples from recognized organizations.
4. Troubleshooting, preparing reagents, and ensuring the proper functioning of instruments in accordance with departmental protocols.
Specimen Processing:
Utilizing the necessary equipment and techniques to prepare specimens for targeted analysis while maintaining their physiological integrity.
Critical Value Recognition:
Identifying and promptly reporting critical values and tests to the relevant clinicians, ensuring effective communication and liaison with healthcare professionals.
Training and Development:
Planning and executing training sessions for new employees, medical laboratory students, and residents, covering all aspects of laboratory operations.
Quality Assurance:
Engaging in data collection for the introduction of new equipment and documenting any processing errors or discrepancies.
Work Environment:
The position involves working primarily in a patient care setting that is adequately lit, temperature-controlled, and ventilated. The role may involve exposure to infectious patients and contaminated materials, necessitating the use of protective clothing when required.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess the necessary certifications and meet the basic requirements as outlined in the job standards. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is essential.
Physical Requirements:
The role demands physical activities such as walking, standing, and lifting objects weighing between 10 and 40 pounds, along with the ability to maintain focus during extended periods.
