Description

The Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion provides leadership and strategic direction to the Chapter's efforts to advance health equity in underserved and underrepresented communities. Reporting to the Executive Director as a member of the Chapter leadership team, this leader will actively collaborate to ensure a strong focus on diversity, equity and inclusion in all strategic plan pillars and Chapter activities. Outcomes include recruiting and successfully collaborating with diverse community partner organizations, community leaders and volunteers, building and conducting culturally appropriate programs and campaigns to reach diverse audiences, and driving KPI growth measuring the Alzheimer's Association's reach in diverse communities. The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion supervises the Community Engagement Manager for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Responsibilities

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and execute community forums to assess the needs of diverse communities, learn from the perspectives of diverse communities, and tailor action plans to address needs.
  • Conduct external market research to maintain knowledge of Indiana communities, needs and opportunities to drive timely and relevant collaboration with other community-based organizations, faith communities, businesses, individuals and projects or initiatives to advance health equity.
  • Analyze service data dashboard to identify gaps in mission delivery within diverse communities.
  • Develop and manage a multi-year business plan for the ALZ Equity for Indiana project, designed to advance health equity and grow the reach of the Chapter's services among diverse communities.
  • Build a community action network (health equity coalition) to support DEI strategic plan goals and drive growth in the Alzheimer's Association's reach among diverse communities, specifically Black, Hispanic/Latino and LGBTQ+ audiences.
  • Identify volunteer community leaders and implement a volunteer recruitment strategy. Recruit, train, deploy and successfully partner with diverse volunteers to conduct outreach and deliver programs.
  • Accountable for managing budget.
  • Both personally and through volunteers, build and deliver culturally appropriate education and support programs tailored to diverse communities.
  • Engage new and existing diverse community partners to understand emerging priorities and unmet needs and continually assess areas of intersection with the Alzheimer's Association strategic priorities.
  • Represent the Alzheimer's Association in the community on relevant coalitions, committees, task forces or groups in the community.
  • Coordinate outreach through community events and speaking opportunities to raise the Association's visibility in diverse communities.
  • Collaborate with Public Relations Director on a culturally relevant awareness campaign with diverse media outlets and Chapter communications channels to grow awareness of Alzheimer's and other dementia, as well as the 24/7 Helpline and Alzheimer's Association resources.
  • Ensure all Chapter staff and key volunteers are trained in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Keep staff and volunteers informed of current issues and updates.
  • Ensure work is documented in a timely, consistent and thorough manner in databases and systems (Personify, moves management, program volunteer community, etc.)
  • Develop and oversee the department budget, goals and objectives.
  • Provide support to staff in other pillars and departments in the development of priorities that support health equity and reflect the perspectives and priorities of diverse communities - including but not limited to public policy, health systems, care and support, concern and awareness, and fund development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public health or related field, Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience in advancing health equity or engaging diverse communities
  • Superior self-management skills, independent initiative and ability to collaborate are essential
  • Ability to build effective relationship networks (inside and outside the Association), including supporting others to work towards common objectives
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, reflecting an understanding of the appropriate use of communication technologies and an appreciation that each audience requires its own approach
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills that reflect an understanding of different learning modalities, group process, and cultural diversity
  • Deadline and detail oriented, adaptable and able to manage multiple projects and tasks
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and demonstrate inclusion
  • Excellent follow-up skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in English language, bilingual preferred
  • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal and computer skills
  • Self-starter, willing to take the initiative
  • Experience in geriatrics and/or Alzheimer's care preferred
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and evenings
  • Willingness to travel throughout Chapter territory and fly to national meetings
  • Access to reliable transportation, must have valid driver's license and proof of insurance
