POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Advisor, Tutoring & Academics at Trinity Youth works with the Director, Youth & Community Partnerships and the Program Manager, Trinity Afterschool to offer instruction, create curriculum, and manage logistics for Trinity Youth Afterschool’s academic programs. The Youth Advisor, Tutoring & Academics will provide academic tutoring for youth in grades 6-12 in Mathematics, English, History, Sciences, and test prep, source staff trainings, and connect with tutoring resources across NYC. In addition to managing the tutoring program, they will be responsible for proper documentation, managing attendance, and maintaining safety standards.

The pay rate for this position is $65 an hour.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Youth Programming

  • Support Trinity Afterschool’s academic programming Monday-Friday. 1:00-6:00 pm, including student tracking, study materials inventory, tutor training development, and Test Prep planning.
  • Create new pathways for academic engagement and success for enrolled members of Trinity Youth.
  • Coordinate with the Director, Youth & Community Partnerships & Program Manager, Trinity Afterschool to ensure appropriate and relevant systems for academic support at Trinity Youth.
  • Support Trinity’s NYC PS school partners interested in academic support.
  • Connect Trinity Youth with tutors/educators with specialized education and tutoring backgrounds in Bilingual (Spanish & English) instruction and IEP’s.
  • Source Study Materials that are relevant to NYC PS Standardized tests (e.g. Regents exams).
  • Ensure health, safety, and wellbeing of Trinity Youth members by providing close supervision of assigned activities.
  • Support and facilitate learning opportunities in a safe and productive environment for youth programs in Trinity Program Spaces and while traveling.
  • Support programs and advocacy opportunities that amplify youth voices and allow youth to develop critical thinking skills that promote youth choice and self-advocacy.
  • Instruct and mentor youth participants.
  • Ensure all participants sign in and out on a daily basis.
  • Ensure returns of surveys, applications, and other important documentation.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Trinity’s emergency and safety procedures and take appropriate actions for emergency situations onsite and during field trips.
  • Create an environment that is safe, culturally sensitive, and relevant to the needs of youth participants.
  • Work closely with Trinity’s Operations Team to deliver meals and snacks for youth activities.
  • Coordinate with Trinity’s Neighborhood Outreach team to connect Youth in need to available resources at Trinity and across New York City.
  • Assume other related responsibilities and special projects as required.
  • Follow and maintain health and safety guidelines per the CDC and Trinity Policy.
  • With Operations, Facilities, and Security, ensure proper set-up and breakdown for Youth activities.
Staff Training:
  • Maintain current certifications for youth safety, health, and compliance per Trinity’s guidelines and policies.
  • Pursue a professional development plan with support from the Youth & Community Care team.
  • Source and provide training in tutoring for Trinity Youth Advisors.
Other:
  • Adhere to confidentiality rules and all other Trinity policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that promotes Trinity’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • Assume other related responsibilities and special projects as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ACTIVITIES
  • Familiar with trauma-informed care, mental health first aid, and de-escalation
  • Knowledge of New York State and College Admissions standardized tests
  • Familiar with tools such as Google Classroom, Jupitur, Blackboard, Khan Academy, and College Now
  • Familiar with and comfortable talking about the Episcopal Church
  • Good customer service and hospitality skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Comfortable working with youth to create a welcoming environment for all ages and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to youth, especially those experiencing personal and family challenges

  • Ability to work Monday – Friday, 1:00PM - 6:00PM from September - June
  • Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities required
REQUIRED AND PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CREDENTIALS
  • Undergraduate Degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience required
  • Experience in Academic Advising and student services
  • Experience working with NYC youth from a variety of backgrounds in formal and informal settings
  • Experience administering programs with youth in community, church, or school settings
