POSITION SUMMARY

The Animal Care Supervisor directs all personnel involved in the care of the animal collection and reviews, hires, and oversees the training of new keeper staff in their zone of supervision, which includes animals in multiple areas. The supervisor ensures compliance with USDA, AZA, state, and federal regulations and oversees all the daily animal management. This position will specifically oversee the zoo’s newly constructed native amphibian conservation center located in the Aline W. Skaggs Wild Utah exhibit. Viewable by zoo guests, the center is poised to accommodate substantial growth of the zoos amphibian recovery efforts to help us reach our strategic goal of releasing more than 5,000 toads on the Utah landscape by 2028.

This position will oversee the daily management of the zoo’s Western toad (Anaxyrus boreas) ex-situ propagation conservation program (the zoo anticipates future programming to include additional native species). This includes coordination with fisheries, zoos and aquariums to manage a studbook and maintain a best management practices manual and a familiarity with the seasonal field work that is conducted by the zoo’s conservation team. Husbandry experience with amphibians, venomous snakes, crocodilians, turtles/ tortoises, lizards, and bioactive enclosures is required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the Associate Director of Animal Care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works closely with Utah’s Hogle Zoo Animal Care Leadership team to ensure high standards of collection management and institutional animal record keeping.
  • Monitor, record, and adjust environmental parameters including temperature, humidity, water quality, etc. readings to adhere to standards.
  • Create and maintain bioactive environments for reptiles and amphibians.
  • Leadership role in selection, training, supervision, evaluation, discipline and assignment of staff.
  • Works along-side staff in areas of oversight including cleaning, feeding, training, and conducting animal programs.
  • Occasional field work for the Western toad conservation program.
  • Maintains a studbook and husbandry manual for the ex-situ Western toad population.
  • Provides input to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Western toad conservation group as it relates to the captive propagation goals.
  • Serves as Institutional Representative to AZA’s Species Survival Programs.
  • Provides expert guidance related to the zoo’s herpetology collection.
  • Provides daily care to the zoos herpetology collection and other species as needed.
  • Assists animal care management with development and implementation of the Zoo’s Institutional Collection Plan.
  • Assists Associate Director of Animal Care with animal acquisitions and dispositions, including coordinating and accompanying shipments.
  • Actively participates in AZA animal programs and related organizations.
  • Assumes, on a rotational assignment, the responsibilities and authorities of running the department in the absence of the Associate Director(s) of Animal Care.
  • Performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects commitment to Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s (UHZ) mission. Create champions for wildlife by making connections between people and animals to inspire action.
  • Monitor exhibits, animals, work areas, and staff to ensure proper standards are maintained.
  • Supervise capture and restraint of animals, as related to moves or veterinary practices.
  • Ensure compliance with USDA, AZA, state and federal regulations; conduct mock inspections.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental activities as related to area.
  • Compiles documents and completes applications and surveys as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience

Associate or Bachelor’s degree in zoological science.

Five years of animal care experience in a zoological setting, specifically including husbandry work with reptiles and amphibians. Water quality and/or fisheries experience preferred.
  • Have demonstrated initiative in leading teams to take on new tasks and responsibilities within the department and aiding other departments.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to foster constructive attitudes and positively influence collaboration and teamwork.
  • Experience in maintaining filters, pumps, misting systems, RO systems and pipework associated with amphibian and reptile exhibits.
  • Have demonstrated high level of problem solving and critical thinking skills and have the ability to lead the same in the team.
  • Possess the characteristics of an Animal Care professional demonstrating competence, professionalism, teamwork, mutual respect and commitment to the mission of the Zoo.
  • Have demonstrated leadership and mentoring to team members in all aspects of the job. This includes communication, time management and leading the team towards achieving the Zoo’s organizational goals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Incumbent performs in an outdoor environment, exposure to the seasonal elements, dust, and allergens for prolonged periods of time. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, which generally involve muscular strain. Eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Must be able to listen and respond to a handheld radio. Ability to stoop, bend, twist, turn, climb, jump, run when necessary, and move quickly to avoid dangerous situations. Must be able to walk on wet and uneven surfaces. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted and 75 lbs. with assistance. Must be able to push and pull up to 53 lbs. A valid driver’s license is required.
