Overview

Alnylam is entering an exciting accelerated growth period as the company moves from an early commercial biotech and scales into a larger biopharmaceutical company off the strength of our pipeline. The Associate Director, Operational Excellence will play an important role in enabling Alnylam to successfully scale and reinvent ourselves to achieve both business results and impact patient lives. The work will involve supporting various high-impact projects aimed at designing and implementing new ways of working, building new capabilities, improve speed in decision making and driving operational improvements in quality, speed and cost all while improving the colleague, customer or patient experience.

The individual will work collaboratively with the Director, Operational excellence and the VP Enterprise Strategy and Portfolio Analytics to identify and prioritize key projects that align with our key growth areas, and lead projects or workstreams for varying operational excellence projects. The individual must have the ability to rapidly context shift from a thought partner to an individual project leader to a team contributor.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to thrive in uncertainty, take on challenges and work effectively in a fast-paced matrix environment with cross-functional teams. Thinking creatively by marrying expertise in creative problem solving and operational improvement frameworks, knowledge of emerging technologies and new innovations, with an understanding of the business to drive tangible, measurable outcomes will enable the individual to be successful in the role.

This position is hybrid and will be primarily located in Cambridge, MA.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead or support variety of projects aimed at operational transformation and improvements, primarily in key business functions such as research, clinical development, medical, commercial, etc.
  • Within the context of a project, execute on building out fact-bases, identifying underlying issues, designing and implementing solutions along with project execution activities such as management reporting, manage project budgets, project management. etc.
  • Research new technologies and innovations that can be used within our operations, and support incorporating them within our projects.
  • Support achievement of desired project objectives ranging from creating new capabilities, improving processes, turnaround time, costs.
  • Work effectively within a global matrixed organization and influence the direction and output within a project.
  • Identify opportunities to establish and continuously improve business practices to maximize resources and achieve operational excellence across multiple expertise areas.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong cross-functional relationships and contribute to our positive environment in support of our culture.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Operations Management, Business or Engineering required. MBA strongly preferred
  • Must have 7+ years of experience working in strategic operational transformation roles
  • Prior pharma / biotech and management consulting experience including multiple years in a matrixed environments preferred
  • Must have training and experience applying creative problem solving or design thinking innovation frameworks
  • Direct experience with operational transformation and improvement in core pharma/biotech business areas including research, clinical development, commercial, etc.
  • Expertise in process improvement and governance methodologies (e.g. root cause analysis, process re-engineering, governance design, RACI's, etc.)
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, management and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with multiple functions
  • Ability to influence cross functional teams
  • Self-starter who can manage through ambiguity, learn on the fly, handle multiple priorities and perform job responsibilities accurately while working in a high energy, deadline-driven, and fast-paced environment
  • Possess the ability to generate enthusiasm, the ability to quickly gain trust and respect of peers and senior leadership and have a track record of successfully driving results through strong partnership with others
