Mental Health Specialist

Job Summary: A mental health specialist will assist inrunning mental health programs based oncontract availability. Examples of contractsare: providing groups to incarcerated youth,psychoeducational workshops to students andmembers of the community, and providing mental health/peer support. Mental healthspecialists will assist with gathering contactinformation to secure contracts and assisttherapist staff in allocating resources for future reference. Working conditions are on a percontract basis, office hours vary throughout the week, office environment may require the use ofcomputers, laptops, telephones, copiers, printers, and carrying items up to 15 pounds in weight.Mental health specialists may sit and stand for long periods of time throughout the working day. Accountabilities: - Gain a thorough understanding of the business goals and objectives of theorganization, including gaining the organization's Group Practice, Treatment,Focus, and Patient Promise. - Aim to maximize mental health potential for community members, through acommitment to the organization's Group Practice, Treatment Focus, and PatientPromise. - Gain a thorough understanding of the local, state, and federal healthcare guidelines. - Gaining a thorough understanding and adhering to business policies when workingon-site or at contracted locations. - Gain a thorough understanding of the scope of work for respective behavioral sciencedisciplines (i.e., mental health specialists). Duties/Responsibilities: - Facilitates group meetings at Apple Valley Juvenile Hall with incarcerated youth. - Facilitate groups per contract requirements. - Facilitates groups based on curriculum standards per contract requirements. - Creates curriculum ideas and PowerPoints for future contracts. - Gathers and analyzes information on group participants through a variety of methodsthat may include observation, interviews, self-report inventories, and/or groupdiscussions. - Collaborates with the group participants in developing plans to positively manage andrespond to issues; assists members with replacing unhealthy or dysfunctionalbehaviors with healthy choices. - Collaborates with group participants to develop post-treatment activity plans (ifapplicable). - Assists group participants in developing new or strengthened communication skillsand methods. - Provide education to clients (if applicable and within the scope of competence). - Evaluate the effectiveness of group educational/mentorship programs. - May assist group participants in allocating needed services or resources. - Present social services program information to the public. - If applicable, develop and maintain accurate records regarding participant progress,evaluations, and any further recommendations. - Maintains compliance with company policy ethical codes and standards. - Other duties and special projects as assigned. Required Skills/Abilities: - Strong sense of diversity and inclusion for ALL group participants. - Superb verbal and written communication skills. - Compassionate and empathetic with a strong ability to establish and build trust. - Excellent listening skills. - Ability to remain calm and reassuring in tense situations and to de-escalatearguments. - May require a thorough understanding of human behavior, various behavioral andaffective disorders, and the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of these disorders. - Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. - Ability to manage stress to work effectively. - Thorough understanding of applicable ethical codes and standards. Education and Experience: - Bachelor's degree in the field of behavioral sciences such as psychology, sociology,child development, social work, counseling, or marriage and family therapy. - 1-2 years of experience (preferred) - Experience leading groups. - Experience working in mental health position (preferred not required). Physical Requirements: - Prol nged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. - Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Additional Requirements: - Access to a vehicle and ability to travel long distances if necessary. Supervisory Responsibilities: - None.
