Family Support Specialist

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Family Support Specialist serves as a vital resource for parents and caregivers, helping to foster successful home environments. This role involves engaging, motivating, and facilitating impactful discussions with clients to assist them in identifying, developing, and achieving their objectives. The Family Support Specialist ensures that the voices and choices of parents are honored and integrated throughout the treatment process. They empower parents and caregivers towards self-sufficiency and independence, providing guidance and support in executing interventions and activities.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The San Bernardino Wraparound program is a community-oriented, family-focused initiative designed to support children with emotional challenges in their local environments at the least intensive level of care. The program aims to minimize the likelihood of out-of-home placements and recurrence of issues by uniting individuals, organizations, and the community as a collaborative decision-making team, with the primary goal of addressing the needs of the child and family. Services are tailored to support the mental health requirements of children and their families, ensuring safe and suitable care while promoting teamwork and collaboration in care planning with the Children and Family Team (CFT) and other child-serving entities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Evaluate and respond to the needs of parents, providing appropriate interventions, resources, and support.
- Act as an advocate and support person for parents during Children and Family Team meetings.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to family culture, values, and beliefs, operating from a family-centered, strengths-based approach.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation in compliance with all program and contractual standards.
- Collaborate with the client's multidisciplinary team, including county representatives and educational institutions, in developing and implementing treatment plans. Attend all required meetings.
- Leverage knowledge of community resources to assist children and their families effectively.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated crisis management skills and the ability to apply them as needed.
- Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Able to establish and maintain appropriate relationships with parents and caregivers.
- Familiarity with parenting strategies, child development, and/or the Child Welfare system.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience with the recovery process from mental illness or substance use disorder is essential.
- Personal parenting experience with a child facing emotional or behavioral challenges, or experience with special needs youth is preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid driver's license and proof of automobile insurance.
- Completion of CPR/First Aid/ProACT certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to drive a vehicle without restrictions, often in heavy traffic and for extended distances (one hour or more) to ensure safe transport to client settings and appointments.
- Ability to see, hear, and smell adequately to operate a vehicle safely and identify potential risks in the environment.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of 10-20 pounds.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, climb stairs (1 or more flights), and walk during family visits.
- Regularly required to sit and use a computer in office settings.
