School Based Behavioral Health Clinician

General Responsibilities:

The School Based Behavioral Health Clinician works as part of an interdisciplinary team of primary care and psychiatry providers from Thundermist Health Center to provide assessment and treatment to students from John F Deering Middle School and West Warwick High School.

The two connected schools house Thundermist's West Warwick School Based Health Center, the Health Hut. The mission of the Health Hut is to reduce barriers to accessing care for students in grades 5-12. The School Based Behavioral Health Clinician provides a range of interventions from crisis work to on-going therapy to a student body with diverse needs. The School Based Behavioral Health Clinician works primarily in the school with some additional hours doing outpatient work at Thundermist Health Center.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree and appropriate license/certification in social work.
  2. Two years clinical experience.
  3. Experience with diverse populations and bi-lingual/bi-cultural candidates (Spanish/English) preferred.
  4. Experience working with children, adolescents, and/or families.
Physical Effort/Environment:

Moderate physical activity is required: sitting, standing, walking, and lifting. Travel to off-site meetings and other program sites as needed is required.

Work Schedule Demands:

The work schedule is 40 hours per week; mornings, afternoons, and evenings as required.

Communication Skills:
  1. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, required.
  2. The ability to effectively work and communicate with a multi-disciplinary team, other service providers, and patients is critical to the success of this position.
Confidentiality of Information:

The incumbent has access to client's medical records, financial information, and documentation regarding prior services from outside agencies. The maintenance of client information confidentiality is required.

Significant Job Functions:

Clinical & Direct Service Responsibilities:
  1. Apply knowledge of Psychiatric Diagnosis (DSM-V-TR & ICD-9) in order to perform and record mental status examination findings and multi-axial diagnostic formulation with assigned patient caseload.
  2. Provide primary prevention, individual assessment, crisis intervention, short term treatment and referral services to students/patients referred by school-based health center nurse practitioner.
  3. Document patient's progress and diagnostic information in the electronic health record.
Documentation & General Administrative Duties:
  1. Perform timely and accurate record keeping in accordance with all Health Center requirements.
  2. Complete behavioral health screening & progress notes, encounter forms, reports, evaluations, and insurance documentation as required by pay sources.
  3. Complete clear, specific, and behaviorally measurable treatment plans with assigned patients.
  4. Maintain cooperative relationships with Health Center employees, School system employees, patients, community agencies and the public.
  5. Work in cooperation with co-workers and supervisory staff.
  6. Deal with team members regarding problems in a constructive manner.
  7. Maintain a willingness to listen to and respond to constructive feedback from supervisory personnel.
  8. Serve on Health Center committees and workgroups as requested.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned for which you are qualified.
