VETERINARY PHARMACY ASSISTANT

Job Description

  • Screen prescription requests for accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare prescriptions (retrieve, count, pour, measure, and sometimes mix) medications for dispensing to patients seen in our facility, including refills
  • Review/report expiration dates/stock levels to inventory manager to maintain stock at appropriate levels
  • Stocks/refills pharmacy supplies
  • Perform simple dosing calculations as needed
  • Possible client interaction to explain use and administration of dispensed medications
Job Skills Required
  • Impeccable attention to detail and good critical thinking skills
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with drugs commonly prescribed in veterinary practice
  • Knowledgeable in handling and administration of the medications commonly prescribed in practice, and able to resource information for others
  • Confidence under pressure
  • Ability to problem solve using common sense and the ability to follow orders from CVTs and DVMs,
  • Able and willing to ask questions when orders require clarification
  • Knowledge of basic computer functions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful work environment. Must be able to maintain professionalism and composure at all times
  • Able to effectively communicate with co-workers, doctors, supervisors, clients and the public in a professional manner
  • Ability to speak, read and write the English language
  • Able to pass background check
Education and experience
  • Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills are required
  • Basic computer literacy with the ability to learn new veterinary based software applications
  • 3+ years of experience in veterinary medicine, or previous pharmacy technician experience
Working and Physical conditions
  • Working conditions are normal for a veterinary hospital, though this position does not require direct patient interaction
  • The noise level is moderate to high and includes business machines, medical equipment and patient barking/howling
  • May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to include but not limited to: eye safety glasses, and latex or nitrile gloves
Hours/Schedule
  • Current opening is for a full time position, four 10-hr shifts 9 am - 7 pm. Weekend shift differential paid.
