Huntsville, United States Blue Origin Full time

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will be the functional manager for a matrixed project engineering team that supports a portfolio of propulsion development programs serving multiple customers. This team is instrumental in establishing, implementing, and improving engineering integration and project management processes, standard methodologies, and tools to drive commonality and consistency across our various engine programs. The team you spearhead works at the intersection of program management, engineering, integrated supply chain, and quality organizations, improving team effectiveness and coordination, and ensuring that the right people are working together to solve problems and deliver results on time. Ultimately, you will be key to encouraging a system-of-systems perspective and culture and integrating project engineering methodology throughout the life cycle of engine development, production, certification, and operations.

As a manager within the Engine Design Office, you will, with the support of your team, work across the Engine Design Office to establish project management standards, share best practices and lessons learned across Blue Engines and the company, and continuously improve the tools and expertise of our amazing team. As part of a diverse team, you will be responsible for the employee lifecycle including performance management and career development, training, allocating engineering resources and driving project engineering consistency and approaches across each of our Engine Programs. You must enjoy solving communication and organizational problems, earning trust, and improving the overall performance of all teams involved.

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and highly organized to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage a team of highly engaged Project Engineers to ensure they, as key enablers of on-schedule and on-budget execution, are equipped to drive successful execution across the Engines Business Unit’s product portfolio.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, coach, mentor, and manage a team of dedicated Project Engineers by providing actionable feedback, setting clear goals, and coordinating project work with other teams and managers.
  • Manage direct reports’ professional development and compliance to company policies (e.g., routine one-on-one development conversations, performance reviews, promotion management, timecards, training, etc.).
  • Own the methodology and strategy for Project Engineering best practices with the objective of driving program success by leveraging consistent application of best practices across Engine programs.
  • Work with product management to develop roadmaps and project plans for enhancing existing and developing new Project Engineering services aligned with program needs.
  • Drive and cultivate strategic partnerships and relationships with relevant teams across Blue Origin.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of Systems or Project Engineering experience, including sophisticated system development projects within the Aerospace, automotive or similar safety critical industry.
  • 4+ years of demonstrated experience leading team members or indirect/matrixed program team members.
  • Technical expertise within one of the following areas: Combustion Devices, Valves, or Turbomachinery.
  • Knowledge and strong fundamentals in project management approaches and techniques.
  • Working familiarity with risk management, configuration management, requirements development, and verification planning.
  • Experience leading and managing small teams on fast-paced projects with little direction and under minimal supervision.
  • Building trusting, strategic and effective working relationships that improve team performance and deliver results.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand an organization’s vision and flow it into practical strategies for making priority decisions to drive results and meet deadlines.
  • Proven history of being able to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree (M.S.) or higher in aerospace, systems engineering, business, or a related field.
  • Experience developing aerospace products from concept phase through new product introduction.
  • Technical expertise with liquid rocket engines and test facilities.
  • Experience developing and implementing processes.
