Brooklyn, United States JUSTICE IN MOTION INC Full time

Justice in Motion

Development Director

Location: Remote, preference for New York City and Spanish Fluency

About Justice in Motion

Justice in Motion protects migrant rights by ensuring justice across borders.

In the face of overwhelming legal and practical barriers, many migrants who have suffered exploitation or abuse at the hands of employers or government officials give up their rights after leaving the United States. Other migrants who flee abuse, violence, and persecution are unable to remain in safety due to lack of evidence to support their claims.

These migrants need “portable justice” - the right and ability to access justice across borders. Justice in Motion is dedicated to ensuring portable justice through legal, educational, and policy initiatives in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America. Essential to this transnational model is our Defender Network, a unique partnership of on-the-ground human rights organizations in Mexico and Central America. Justice in Motion makes sure that wherever migrants go, their rights will follow.

The Opportunity

Justice in Motion seeks a passionate and entrepreneurial leader to serve as the organization’s Development Director (Director). The Director is an authentic storyteller, a relationship-builder and systems thinker – someone who loves working with a small team, and who cares deeply about immigration and human rights.

Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a key member of Justice in Motion’s leadership team, the Director will oversee the development strategy, systems, and staff.  The Director will steward, and work to grow over the long-term, a $3M+ portfolio of foundation and individual supporters, building on the momentum of a $2M investment from MacKenzie Scott.  The new leader will work with staff across the organization to identify, cultivate, close, and steward donors and help build the systems internally to support the departments.

Ideal Candidate

The Director will be a seasoned fundraising professional with 5+ years of related experience. They will have the following professional skills and personal qualities:

  • A fundraiser who has found a kinship in sales language and approaches. This is someone eager to build meaningful connections and hungry for the opportunity to make the ask - because they know that philanthropy is about having the chance to make an impact. They might have started in a corporate sales or business development setting, or found sales-based best practices have worked well in fundraising.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience managing a team of fundraising professionals. This requires the ability to set goals and expectations, motivate team members, and provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Excels at upward management, understanding the universe in which an Executive Director operates and how to maximize their time to get results. This person is both direct and respectful, and naturally gains the trust of leadership. They know how to engage people’s strengths toward the goal and give clear action steps and coaching so they can contribute effectively.
  • A detail-oriented systems thinker. This is someone who enjoys improving upon existing processes so they will best serve the organization in the long haul. They are skilled at collecting and tracking relevant information using a CRM database like Salesforce.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This is someone who is passionate about crafting compelling donor communications and marketing materials that resonate with potential donors. They have excellent writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Natural collaborator: This person demonstrates emotional intelligence, self-awareness and patience, and is able to work with stakeholders from a variety of cultural backgrounds, with different paradigms and visions for how social change happens.
  • Proactive communicator: This person excels at confirming what’s being requested, checking for understanding, communicating progress regularly, and raising potential issues before they become major problems. They welcome feedback, and are oriented toward the larger success of the work, employing patience and finesse to meet people where they are.
  • Patience and adaptability: This is someone who knows people operate in different ways, and takes the time needed to work with each individual, and follow up appropriately. They are able to adapt to and thrive amidst changing circumstances, and have a demonstrated ability to learn new concepts. This person appreciates creative planning and adjusting to meet new needs.
  • Cross-cultural awareness: This is someone who enjoys being able to connect with a wide variety of people, and demonstrates curiosity and empathy.
