JOB DESCRIPTION

As an integral part of a team, the Critical Care Paramedic is responsible for patient care and support activities surrounding the coordination and performance of patient transfers/transports/emergency responses. Incumbent is cognizant of and adheres to the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital System.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Within scope of training and certification, and within all variations of team composition, the Critical Care Paramedic will provide comprehensive, effective and safe patient care during all patient encounters, including ICU-level care throughout inter-facility transport of all patient populations.

  2. As a component of clinical care, attains and maintains expert proficiency in the use of all current and future biomedical devices that are applicable to patient transfer / transport. Examples include, but are not limited to: mechanical ventilators, high-frequency ventilators, infusion pumps, intra-aortic balloon pump, video laryngoscopy device, circulatory assist devices, pacemaker, infant transport isolette, nitric-oxide delivery system, body temperature control device, EKG monitor / defibrillator, invasive monitor, etc.

  3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

a. Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group.

b. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment.

c. Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs.

d. Uses communication techniques, which are age appropriate.

  1. Observes patient behavior and responses to treatment, reports and records routine and specific patient data, such as: blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations. Documents findings in EMR.

  2. Works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team, both internally and externally.

  3. Promotes, supports and positively represents the Mount Sinai Health System and the EMS department to all internal and external customers.

  4. Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks.

  5. Function as ambassador to patients and their families. Assist them in navigating the patient transfer process and provide them with a positive impression and experience with the Mount Sinai Health System.

  6. When on an ambulance shift, and not actively engaged in patient transport activities or EMS department functions, incumbent will do rotations within various relevant care settings, such as the ED, PICU, NICU, OR, etc. The objective is to support continued education for the critical care paramedics.

  7. In support of quality patient care and billing activities, perform compressive, accurate and timely (completion and submittal) patient care documentation.

  8. Ensure the safety of the patient at all times.

  9. Maintains exemplary driving record and operates ambulance with great skill and care.

  10. Attain and maintain expert ability to operate and troubleshoot all ambulance mechanical and patient support systems and technologies.

  11. Maintain current strong working knowledge of the critical care transport industry.

  12. Attends required meetings and training sessions.

a. This includes a lengthy initial orientation and training program.

i. This, and all training sessions and meetings, may take place in varied locations and will entail work hours that will may from the operational ambulance work schedule.

  1. Actively engage in self-learning / self-study of information related to critical care transport patient care and knowledge required to attain and maintain required licenses and certifications.

  2. Actively participates in QA / QI activities.

  3. Incumbent must actively and collaboratively participate in, and adhere to, applicable scheduling and vacation usage policies and practices.

  4. As necessary, to fulfill weekly work hours, incumbent may be assigned to other critical care team related duties, such as QA work / case review.

  5. As necessary to maintain core paramedic skills, incumbent will work an occasional 911 shift.

  6. Incumbent is open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experiences of other people, and promotes an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity.

  7. Wears issued uniform and maintains professional appearance while on duty.

  8. Restocks supplies and cleans ambulance and equipment as needed.

  9. Assumes an active role in maintaining ambulance supplies at operational location.

  10. Must have expert ability to utilize all applicable technology.

  11. Must complete all compliance requirements by their deadline.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four year high school diploma or equivalent

  • Successful completion of training program as an NYSDOH Emergency Medical Technician, and other protocol update programs as currently required

  • External and internal promotional opportunity applicants must successfully pass the MSHS EMS EMT / paramedic candidate exam. A minimal score of 80%, on all sections, is considered passing. Those that do not achieve a passing score may retest no sooner than seven days, and within 21 days, from the initial exam date

  • 1 + years 911 experience preferred

  • Certification as a NYS EMT

  • Tri-State issued driver's license with infraction free driving abstract

  • Emergency Vehicle Operators Course completion desirable
