SUMMARY

The Computer Support Specialist supports the maintenance and updating of all computer applications, hardware and equipment at all Library locations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

ORGANIZATION-WIDE EXPECTATIONS
  1. Follows established Library and personnel policy, procedures and work standards
  2. Attends work regularly, on time, and as scheduled
  3. Exhibits welcoming, helpful, positive and friendly behavior to all patrons, staff and guests at all times in all communications formats (verbal and non-verbal)
  4. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
  5. Regularly monitors Library communication venues including but not limited to employee email, staff bulletin boards and the intranet
  6. Participates in meetings, conferences, continuing education, community engagement, and special projects as required by the Elkhart Public Library or as dictated by professional commitment
  7. Addresses, or assists in addressing, issues and concerns related to the safety of Library staff and users as well as the security and maintenance of Library buildings and equipment
JOB-SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITY
  1. Provides customer service and basic technical support at the Public Computer Center desk, by email, and by telephone.
  2. Handles financial transactions for public printing/copying, computer supplies and patron fees, including cash drawer balance and daily deposits.
  3. Assists patrons in the use of digital library resources.
  4. Performs Public Computing Center opening and closing tasks as assigned.
  5. Installs, configures, maintains and upgrades computer hardware and software as requested or required
  6. Provides individual, group, and classroom instruction with hardware and software as requested
  7. Troubleshoots, resolves/repairs and follows up with users regarding connectivity and/or computer problems reported by Library patrons and personnel
  8. Keeps current on technological advancements and new products of potential importance to the Library and makes recommendations in line with long-range technology plans
  9. Coordinates technology requests and sets up meeting rooms, ranging from webinars to large presentations
  10. Performs designated administrative and/or clerical duties


WORK CONDITIONS

  • Full-time (including evenings and weekends); on-call for emergency service
  • Frequent local travel, occasional long distance travel
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant training or professional experience
  • Prior library experience is a plus
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously in person and on the telephone with people in a business and public service context, and with professional colleagues
  • Excellent and diverse computer software and hardware knowledge and skills, and the ability to apply that knowledge
  • Proficient in a Windows environment
  • Ability to learn and adapt
  • Above-average mathematical skills
  • Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow instructions, prioritize tasks and organize daily work flow
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Spanish speaking ability preferred (the Library adds a premium to position's hourly rate for demonstrated skills)
  • Above-average written and oral language and communication skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and business correspondence, along with general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and/or governmental regulations
  • Ability to effectively write reports, business correspondence and procedural or technical manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Library personnel and the general public in one-to-one and group situations
