El Museo del Barrio, founded by a coalition of Puerto Rican educators, artists, and activists, is the nation’s leading Latino and Latin American cultural institution. The Museum welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to discover the artistic landscape of these communities through its extensive Permanent Collection, varied exhibitions and publications, bilingual public programs, educational activities, festivals, and special events.

SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF ROLE

Access Programs at El Museo del Barrio are designed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, families, and adults who are part of the disability community.  The Access Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of programs designed to increase the accessibility of the Museum for a range of audiences, including individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, individuals who are blind or have low vision, individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and older adults.

The Access Coordinator will foster partnerships and develop relationships with schools, community organizations, centers for older adults, and with colleagues at the museum and in the field to increase access to the museum’s resources and programs for visitors of all abilities. 

The Access Coordinator will be an experienced and forward-thinking museum professional who is passionate about inclusion, equity, and social justice, and who will be creating programs and resources that engage individuals of all abilities with art and art-making experiences. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with the Interim Director of Education and Public Programs and Manager of Education to create the strategic vision for Access programs at El Museo del Barrio.
  • Coordinating the development, implementation, and faciltiation of accessible virtual and in-person educational programs on and off-site for diverse audiences with physical, sensory, developmental, and cognitive disabilities.
  • Coordinate Access visits, including developing lesson plans for gallery tours and art- making workshops, preparing art and teaching materials; contacting teachers before the visit, assisting with outreach, communicating with other museum educators, and facilitating the programs as needed. 
  • Develop partnerships and foster strong relationships with schools, community organizations, and centers for older adults serving individuals with disabilities. Support audience outreach initiatives in ways that meet the needs of diverse disability communities.
  • Develop sensory-friendly programs and resources for neurodivergent children and their families. 
  • Serve as the primary liaison for Arts & Minds, a program for adults with Alzheimer's disease and dementia; ensuring program dates, materials, and proper functioning of the partnership.
  • Ensure all materials, resources, and equipment are maintained to uphold ADA guidelines for museum practices.
  • Take inventory and purchase all necessary materials for Access programs according to the budget.
  • Prepare or advise on all Access-related materials for the galleries including social narratives, large print labels, Braille labels, captioning for videos, touch objects, and other materials as needed.
  • Respond to any inquiries from visitors about gallery accessibility and Access programs.
  • Help to develop and facilitate Access trainings for museum educators and teaching artists.
  • Serve as an in-house museum educator; lead Access tours and workshops for K-12 and adults as needed.
  • Attend all walkthroughs, lectures, and training sessions in conjunction with the Permanent Collection, temporary exhibitions, and cultural celebrations.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support visitors with disabilities in their experience throughout the Museum.
  • Oversee documentation, evaluation, and assessment of Access Programs; and conduct research to develop new programs. Contribute to grant proposals/reports and budget proposals.
  • As a member of the Education Department team, attend department and program planning meetings, assist in other areas of the department, and contribute to departmental/institutional projects as needed, which may include special events on weekends and evenings. 
     
QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA in Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies, or BFA in Studio Art, or similar required. MA in Art/Museum Education, MFA in Studio Art, or similar preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience teaching, coordinating programs, facilitating community outreach, and supervising staff in a museum environment, arts organization, and/or related service agency. 
  • Knowledge and experience with best practices working with Access groups; including diverse audiences with physical, sensory, developmental, and cognitive disabilities.
  • Bilingual/ Spanish language speaking, reading, and writing proficiency preferred.
  • Strong interest and experience teaching diverse students in a museum and/ or alternative learning environment; classroom teaching experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of object-based and inquiry-based teaching methodologies and concepts; curriculum development experience required.
  • Experience teaching studio arts and knowledge of a variety of art media, techniques, and skills.
  • Excellent teaching, writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • A passion for inclusion, equity, and social justice; knowledge of best practices in museum accessibility
  • Detail-oriented flexible, creative, and enthusiastic team player with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and manage time accordingly.
  • Background and interest in Latinx, Latin American, and Caribbean art and culture.
  • Basic knowledge of American Sign Language preferred; Experience in Verbal Description techniques, working with social narratives, and or Universal Design.
  • Working knowledge of ADA, Section 504 legislation, and accommodation guidelines.
  • Relationships within various disability communities in New York.
  • Available to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed.
