This Opportunity

WSP is looking for a senior hydrotechnical or water resource engineer for modeling and assessments in our Wexford, PA office. The modeling and assessment may include hydrologic, hydraulic, fluvial geomorphic, and sediment transport analyses. Mitigation design will include controlling scour and lateral migration through technical engineering design for the stream, riverine, and floodplain environment. The candidate must be comfortable with the use of technology in the practice of water resource modeling. This position will include opportunities on a variety of projects such as linear alignments for pipelines, transportation corridors, and infrastructure siting. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated education or field experience in water resource modelling. This senior position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced team that provides solutions on hydrotechnical, geological, civil, and geotechnical engineering projects. The work entails a variety of office-related and outdoor "hands-on" activities, with a need to carefully follow instructions, document activities, solve problems, and provide proactive communication.

Your Impact
  • Work with project teams on engineering projects that involve field activities, site observations, data evaluation, and office work.
  • Support and manage projects, with an emphasis on water resource and hydrotechnical engineering.
  • Complete hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using spreadsheet-based tools, and/or software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS programs, or other 2D hydrodynamic modeling tools (i.e., HEC-RAS 2D, TUFLOW, etc.).
  • Assess open-channel and floodplain erosion and scour processes and develop mitigation strategies such as scour countermeasures considering environment and natural design (i.e., fish passage, habitat, etc.).
  • Assess geomorphic and sediment transport processes.
  • Complete basin or site-scale water balance and water supply assessments
  • Design storm drain, culverts, open channels, and diversions.
  • Prepare documents and review those prepared by junior staff, including engineering drawings, specifications, work plans and reports.
  • Research and write technical reports summarizing geology with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as charts, modeling, maps, cross-sections, and other illustrations.
  • Conduct or manage field assessments.
  • Develop and assist with development and scoping of projects.
  • Provide technical direction, oversight, mentoring, and training to junior-level staff in all aspects of project delivery.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies and clients, including preparation for and participation in meetings, preparation of progress reports, proposals, and other correspondence, responding to client requests, and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Support national and regional client programs for the various sectors through active participation with appropriate national and global technical teams.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of business plans related to the growth of our sector services; provide market and industry insight and facilitate development of marketing strategies.
  • Participate in identification of regional technical needs and recruiting for these skills in collaboration with senior colleagues.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and client/site-specific procedures which may include safely plans, PPE, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory documentation, and logbooks.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering with a focus on hydrology.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience working as an engineering geologist.
  • Knowledge of hydrotechnical research techniques and protocols.
  • Ability to coordinate with clients, colleagues, and third-party groups and understand requirements.
  • Analytical mindset, detail oriented, and experience with geological research techniques required.
  • Possess computer skills and have experience with computer software including Microsoft Office and basic data management applications. Possess geologic field skills and have experience in field mapping and identification of geologic hazards.
  • Ability to be comfortable in remote settings and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks as needed to complete an assignment.
  • Local and potential national travel (up to 50% of the time) with possible opportunities for long-term assignments at project sites.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Possess competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a professional and non-professional audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in geology, engineering geology, or related field.
  • Experience in using GIS and remote sensing data (e.g., Lidar and aerial imagery).
  • Research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Experience in midstream pipeline hydrotechnical work.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Professional Engineer certification in Pennsylvania or ability to receive comity.
