The central work of Public Affairs is to build strategic relationships with opinion leaders who affect the reputation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and whose actions and influence can help or hinder the Church's mission.

Supervise the implementation of public policy and establish appropriate relationships with government officials of the United States as well as other groups and organizations and assigned. Oversee the development of relationships and the opening of doors with embassies, governments and organizations. The Public Affairs Department serves the needs of the Public Affairs Committee (three members of the Twelve and four members of the Seventy) which is a committee of the First Presidency and chaired by one of the members of the Quorum of the Twelve. The Brethren expect this position to assist them in carrying out their charge to preach the gospel to all the world; to handle government and international affairs and media originating in Washington, D.C., and oversee coordination of Church efforts at the United Nations; to provide information and service on national/international legislative issues and handle other sensitive matters; to act as Church spokesman when assigned; to originate international legislative affairs meetings and interact with congressional delegates as situations require or as requested.

This work is an important resource to the governing bodies of the Church and supports area presidencies as appropriate and/or requested. Under the guidance of Public Affairs, responsible for initiating and cultivating international relationships and for maintaining contacts with foreign governments in embassies and international agencies, and assisting area presidencies as international problems arise. The office is responsible for maintaining a center serving key people, including media, in Washington, D.C.

Degree in public relations, international relations, government affairs, political science and/or related field or experience. Related graduate degree and/or experience preferred. In-depth understanding of Church doctrine, history, leadership and policies.

An in-depth understanding of countries and their policies. A unique sensitivity to political climates coupled with the ability to communicate with, cultivate relationships, initiate activities, host and maintain ongoing dialogue with a variety of decision makers in these arenas. The capability to articulate the Church's concerns and needs in language that can be commonly understood by a variety of cultures and political systems. The ability to maintain contacts.

* Ensure that appropriate relationships are maintained with foreign governments in the embassies and international agencies in Washington, D.C., and in the ambassadorial missions to the United Nations in New York. 10%* Work to find solutions to serious Church problems overseas, expand Church influence, etc. 10%* Oversee the development of a listing of Church members with expertise in international government and diplomacy; academia, international businesses and agencies, private sector affairs, and a fluency in foreign languages. 5%* Provide opportunities for General Authorities to meet with dignitaries, government leaders, etc., in country or in Washington, D.C., as requested. Ensure appropriate announcements are made. 5%* Ensure appropriate relationships are being built through events such as Embassy receptions, public engagements, entertaining in member homes, at restaurants, at cultural and Church religious events, etc. 5%* Facilitates timely and effective Church response to and coordination of selective legislative issues by careful monitoring and analysis. Meets with congressional delegates as needed. 20%* Oversee the work with national, international and local media originating in Washington, D.C. to provide accurate information on the Church. 10%* Develop appropriate relationships with members of Congress and their staffs through events such as receptions, public engagements, office calls, and other cultural and Church activities. 15%* Develop and make recommendations relative to public policy which facilitates the resolution of problems of concern to the Church and other like-minded organizations. 15%* Represents the Church in selected coalitions and serves on such committees as the Executive Committee of the Religious Alliance Against Pornography. 5%
