Manufacturing Failure Analysis Engineer

As a Manufacturing Failure Analysis Engineer at Boston Dynamics, you will identify causes of failure in our products to provide insight into how we can improve performance, quality, and reliability. Working closely with test, quality, manufacturing, and design engineers, you will understand the circumstances of failures, perform hands-on inspection and test of electronic and mechanical components/assemblies, and provide detailed and summary-level documentation to the larger team.
Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications, logistics and warehouses.
Day to day activities:
- Ensure contemporaneous documentation of failures on the manufacturing line and at our internal test facilities by rapidly responding to failures and capturing relevant data
- Review, update, organize and report on failure tickets and metrics
- Work with test engineers, technicians, and design engineers to tear down and inspect failed robots and subassemblies
- Review and understand product specifications, component datasheets, block diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings as needed to identify causes of failure
- Use tools and test equipment to identify and document failed components
- Record failure analysis results in a database
- Significant experience in failure analysis of electromechanical systems as a design engineer, quality engineer, or service technician
- Excellent technical communication skills for both in-depth analyses and high-level summaries
- Working knowledge of motion control systems including motors, gearboxes, and sensors
- Working knowledge of mechanical components and design patterns
- Working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties
- Working knowledge of PCBAs, connectors, and cable assemblies
- Experience using technical documentation and software logs to identify failures
- Experience with structured problem solving frameworks like DMAIC, 8D, 5 Why, Ishikawa, et cetera
- Experience or knowledge of warehouse operations
- Experience in design or repair of industrial robots
- Working knowledge of machine vision principles
- Experience with CAD software (CATIA preferred)
- Experience with Jira
