About the Position
The City's Intern Program is a unique opportunity for students or recent graduates seeking public service experience and hands-on involvement with local government public policy to serve as a part-time, paid intern in a City department. The City of Del Mar currently has a vacancy for an Intern I/II in the City Manager's Office. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated graduate student studying Public Administration (MPA), Public Policy (MPA), Business Administration (MBA) or a related field.

Working for the City of Del Mar provides interns with valuable insight on the daily happenings of local government and presents unique opportunities to contribute to the accomplishment of community goals. Interns will have the ability to work side by side with Del Mar's city leaders to innovate ideas, analyze existing programs, and improve local affairs.

City Manager's Office
The City Manager's office is responsible for implementing the goals, priorities, and policies of the City Council and overall management of all City operations. Interns in the City Manager's office will have the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments such as assisting with development and implementation of City programs; public communications; management level special projects; environmental sustainability related activities; and legislative research and analysis.

Candidates enrolled in a Master's Program in a related area or with prior work experience are particularly desirable.
Supplemental Information

Work Hours
This is a part-time, temporary position. Work hours are not to exceed 1,300 hours per fiscal year. However, in order for the Intern and the City to have the most valuable experience, a minimum commitment of 300 hours to the internship is required.

Compensation
Probationary/Regular part-time employees shall be paid the hourly equivalent of the monthly salary paid to a full-time employee in the classification to which they are assigned or paid according to the approved for Miscellaneous, Part-Time, Temporary and Hourly Employees.

Employees shall move through Steps A-E in their range at the discretion of the Department Head and with City Manager's approval and must have completed a minimum of one year of paid time at each previous Step and demonstrated satisfactory performance.

Part-Time, Seasonal, Temporary positions are limited to 1,300 hours per fiscal year. The City of Del Mar provides only limited benefits for temporary employees. These benefits include the City's retirement contributions of 1.45% to Medicare and 1.3% to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS), an alternate retirement system. Employee contributions of 1.45% to Medicare and 6.2% to PARS are required for these benefits and will be deducted from employees' paychecks.

Additionally, in accordance with State law, employees are provided sick leave that accrues at one hour for every 30 hours of work, with a maximum accrual of up to 24 hours per year.

Employees in the following positions will receive one and a half times (1.5x) their normal hourly rate for all hours worked on the following holidays: Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Independence Day (July 4), and Labor Day (1st Monday in September): Student Lifeguard, Seasonal Lifeguard I - III, Seasonal Worker I - II.
