We are assisting our client, Episcopal Homes of Minnesota, with the recruitment and selection of a strategic hands-on Human Resources Director. Episcopal Homes of Minnesota is a leader in senior care services for 124 years offering homes and services for people in Senior Apartments, Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Care centers in the Midway area of St. Paul. They complement their homes with a home care service, foundation, a management company and a robust campus life program that provides a fitness center, pool, theater, first class dining room, pub and special events.

The Human Resource Director is responsible for overall administration, compliance, strategy, policy and procedure development, coordination, and evaluation of the human resources function. This includes workforce recruitment including all nurse staffing, onboarding, staff training and development, payroll administration, compensation and benefits, compliance, risk management and related activities. The Human Resources Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

This position is in-person and located in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration, Planning and Development

• Prepares annual plans and strategies to assist the organization in the pursuit of its mission and strategic objectives.

• Initiates new programs, policies and procedures as needed.

• Monitors effectiveness of implemented or ongoing programs and strategies.

• Ensures that HR administers personnel files and other employee records in accordance with all federal and state regulations.

Human Resource Office Management

• Assures that personnel policies, practices, and the employee handbook are current and are distributed to managers, staff, and new hires. Communicates and interprets human resource policies, procedures, and employee benefits to managers and staff.

• Develops compensation packages (benefits, bonus structures, compensation).

• Supports executive management in the annual review, preparation and administration of wage and salary program.

• Plans and implements the annual benefit sign up and education events.

• Serves as a resource to managers, supervisors, and staff in matters of employee discipline and/or termination. Assists with investigations where necessary.

• Responsible for compliance with all existing governmental and labor legal requirements including any related to the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Department of Labor, workers compensation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Responsible for compliance with all State and Local employment laws.

• Oversees Training and Development and Talent Acquisition teams and strategies.

• Assists in administering the Educational Scholarship program.

• Directs employment processes including advertising, applicant screening and job offers.

• Assists with the growth and development of the corporate Safety and AWAIR programs.

• Coordinates or conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separation.

• Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the CEO or COO, on personnel matters, including workers compensation, unemployment and other claims or personnel matters.

• Oversees payroll processing and compliance.

Financial Management Tasks

• Assists with preparation of the annual budget as it relates to HR initiatives.

• Manages financial resources according to budget and revenue projections.

Pursuit of Excellence

• Is engaged in EH Quality Initiative and maintains “Quality Board.”

• Develops and implements quality improvement projects.

• Interprets vision of the organization and develops and implements strategies that align with the vision, goals and objectives.

• Collaborates with fellow team members to foster cooperation and goal alignment.

• Influences cross-functional relationships and encourages partnerships.

• Questions results in a professional, respectful manner to ensure the best outcome for the organization.

• Analyzes data, articulating root-cause analysis and linking to specific improvement areas.

• Stays up to date with industry trends and best practices, apply this knowledge to drive innovation and growth.

• Works to engage frontline staff.

• Works adequate FT hours in keeping with the position responsibilities, EH policies and informs supervisor of planned absences.

• Maintains consistent office hours and communicates office hours with team.

• Coordinates staff schedules to maintain staff presence in Director’s absence.

• Prioritizes timely execution of HR initiatives and projects.

• Performs other tasks as assigned.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related business field

• 5 or more years of human resources leadership experience, preferably in the senior care/living environment.

• Professional certifications such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP PHR, or SPHR preferred.

• Paycor implementation and/or administrator experience is highly desirable.

• Extensive expertise with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

• Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

• Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.

• Exhibit high proficiency in all Microsoft Office suite applications.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform the essential functions of the position including, but not be limited to the following:

• Office environment – use of office equipment including computer, telephone, copier/printer.

• Ability to sit at a computer for an extended period.

• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
