Introduction

The Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH) works with our local and tribal public health partners, and community groups statewide, on a wide variety of programs and services that protect the health of Wisconsin residents.

DPH is recruiting for a Lead & Asbestos Training Accreditation Specialist in the Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health (BEOH).

T his position offers the option to work remotely up to 5 days per week and will be headquartered at the DPH central or regional offices in Madison, Milwaukee, or Waukesha. Travel throughout the southcentral and southeastern regions of the state may be required up to 40% of the time, including some statewide travel and overnight stays planned in advance.

Position Summary

As the Lead & Asbestos Training Accreditation Specialist, you will be responsible for leading the program's work to approve and oversee training courses that qualify students for certification to do regulated lead or asbestos work under Chapter DHS 159 and 163, Wis. Adm. Code. The position ensures training companies adequately prepare students to work safely with these materials. Duties include:
  • Reviewing written applications, materials, and plans for asbestos and lead training courses to determine eligibility for accreditation.
  • Monitoring accredited courses for compliance with regulatory requirements by auditing live classes and reviewing training records and issuing enforcement actions as appropriate to address violations.
  • Promoting quality lead and asbestos training by collaborating with trainers on materials (e.g., fact sheets, exercises, talking points, etc.) to meet learning objectives, and by routinely engaging trainers with opportunities to learn together and from each other about best practices.
  • Maintaining, developing, evaluating, and revising written procedures related to accreditation work, and contributing to program policy and administrative rule development.

Salary Information

The starting pay is between $33.00 and $35.00 per hour (approximately between $68,600 and $72,800 per year), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. An add-on of $1.00 per hour may be paid for bilingual skills in Spanish*.

Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. The position is classified as an Environmental Health Specialist - Senior and is in pay schedule and range 15/03. A 12-month probationary period is required.

*Note: If applicable, the selected candidate will be required to complete a language assessment in order to receive the add-on pay described above.

  • For positions that allow remote working flexibility, working outside of Wisconsin or in bordering cities will not be allowed except in extremely limited circumstances due to the need to report to an office location in Wisconsin on short notice.
  • Employees must have access to both a private workspace and secure high-speed internet for remote work option. Mileage reimbursement to the employee's headquarter location is not provided. Remote work flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.
  • This position requires the ability to drive a State vehicle or the ability to provide one's own transportation. In order to become authorized to drive a State vehicle, you must meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy .

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:
  • Experience or coursework/training regarding the provision of instruction, training or education.
  • Experience gathering and documenting information obtained through interviews, audits, or document reviews to determine compliance with laws, rules, eligibility requirements, etc.
  • Experience writing a variety of plain language documents and communication materials, editing the writing of others, and giving and receiving feedback on writing.
Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:
  • E xperience developing, designing, or evaluating instructional programs (e.g. designing learning experiences, creating course materials, developing student assessments, etc.) to meet learning objectives.
  • Experience or education related to environmental health/justice, occupational health and safety, or health equity topics (e.g. coursework, advocacy, outreach, etc.).
  • Experience conducting process, product, or service quality improvement projects.
