The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and drive projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger, more important and more complex accounts. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Viewed as an expert within a product area and able to mentor less experienced underwriters.

What you'll be doing:
  • Profitably underwrite and grow a book of predominantly Miscellaneous E&O business
  • Select appropriate risks in accordance with underwriting guidelines/strategy providing constructive terms and conditions for both Markel and our clients
  • Implement corrective and/or improvement measures on renewals as necessary
  • Work closely with product line leaders to seize opportunities to enhance our product, processes, and strategy
  • Keep close contact with key producers and gather critical information on the marketplace and specific feedback on our market position
  • Implement constructive growth plans targeted specifically at key production opportunities
  • Act as a mentor to less experienced underwriters
  • Actively communicate with professional liability team and leadership in order to seize cross selling opportunities and improve our platform
What we're looking for:
  • Four year college degree is preferred
  • 7+ years of professional liability underwriting experience (Misc. E&O experience is a plus)
  • Excellent technical and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility
  • Demonstrated relationship building, marketing and sales skills
  • Ability and willingness to utilize new technologies so as to enhance outcomes
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%
  • Have a winning mindset, a willingness to be a key part of a team, and enjoy your workplace, your coworkers and the process of improvement
