JOB SUMMARY

The Risk Manager administers property, liability, and other risk management programs, working with insurance brokers and carriers. Responsibilities include writing insurance specifications, negotiating with brokers, managing relationships, and approving billings. The role also involves reviewing policies, handling claims, developing risk identification and control programs, evaluating financial impacts of risks, preparing annual reports and chairing the University Safety Committee. The Risk Manager will work closely with the Executive Director of Auxiliary Services and with the Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but is not limited to the following:

Basic Function:

  • Administer the property, liability, and other risk management programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management program collaborating withinsurance brokers and carriers.
  • Write specifications for insurance quotations and negotiate with brokers to purchase adequate coverage.
  • Select and manage broker relationships for Risk Management Program members, negotiate insurance policies and programs and approve premium billings.
  • Review insurance policies for completeness of coverage and technical language.
  • Review all claims against member institutions, initiate appropriate investigations, andrecommend actions for resolution.
  • Develop and oversee a risk identification and control program aimed at minimizing risks to faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Evaluate the financial impact of various risks and recommend efficient methods for risk treatment
  • Maintain a central file for risk management and insurance matters.
  • Stay updated on legal, regulatory, and competitive environments affecting the insurance industry.
  • Assess and recommend organizational self-insurance.
  • Prepare and deliver an annual report on risk management activities, accomplishments, and financial impact.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including contracting for risk management services.
EDUCATION

Required Education:

Bachelor's in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, HR, or any related field

Preferred Education:

MA or MS in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, HR, or any related field

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Preferred

Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM)

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

Five years or more of related work

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Vision: Constant visual attention to detail for reviewing documents, data entry, and reading printed and electronic information.
  • Hearing: Constant listening to understand and interpret verbal communication in meetings, phone calls, and other interactions.

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

TRAINING

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated. Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated. Required compliance training is as follows:
  • Four to six months to learn the details of the position.
  • Twelve months to perform all duties with minimum supervision.
SAFETY

  • Employees must report any unsafe work conditions or practices, as well as any near-miss incidents, to their supervisor and Risk Management.
  • Work-related injuries must be immediately reported to Security and Human Resources. When life or limb are at risk, please dial 911. Supervisors and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to the Office of Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
  • Emergency Employees report for or must remain at work in emergency situations. Dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to this position, unless instructed otherwise by your direct supervisor or a member of the Leadership Team.


SCREENING

All full-time positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks. Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the University's insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
