Basic Information

  • Reports to the Central Evening & Weekend Supervisor.
  • 20 hours per week.
  • $16.93 per hour.
  • Position is open until filled.

Schedule

Monday: 3 pm - 7 pm

Tuesday: 3 pm - 7 pm

Saturday: 8:30 am - 5 pm

Sunday: 1 pm - 5 pm

Job Duties (Essential Functions)
  1. Provides basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; collects fines and charges; updates customer records in the computer; verbally explains circulation policies and procedures; makes other computer inquiries; and processes patron requests for reserve items.
  2. Provides excellent customer service (in-person or over the phone): assist patrons with use of library databases, computer equipment, and software; process patrons' request material; prepares and sends Interlibrary Loan requests; provides patrons with reader's advisory assistance; and if unable to assist with the request, directs call to the appropriate staff person.
  3. Maintains effective courteous working relationships with all library patrons and staff.
  4. Lifts and routes materials, which may weigh up to 10 pounds, from book bins and shelves.
  5. Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.

Requirements
  1. Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public in person & over the telephone, working effectively with customers of all ages.
  2. Demonstrated ability to be a team player.
  3. Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies including computer procedures; willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
  4. Demonstrated ability to use decision making skills to reflect values-based principles.
  5. Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.
  6. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  7. Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
  8. Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level.
  9. Many duties performed while standing and bending; ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  10. Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Required Education and Experience:
  1. High school diploma or G.E.D. This requirement may also be met by an equivalent combination of education, work experience, and life experience.
  2. Two years of college preferred.
  3. Customer Service experience preferred.
