About the Position

Fuss & O'Neill is seeking a Senior Water Resources and Climate Resilience Engineer to join our growing climate adaptation and resilience practice in Connecticut and throughout the Northeast. We are looking for a creative technical expert with strong design skills within our Water and Natural Resources practice and lead development of designs for sustainable approaches to help address issues related to climate-related hazards and stormwater management. The ideal candidate will also possess a broad base of knowledge relative to ecological systems, water resources, and watershed processes. This position will focus on climate adaptation and resilience projects primarily for local government and other public agencies, although it could also include work for the private sector.

This is a multi-disciplinary position that requires strong knowledge of civil/environmental engineering practices and principles along with understanding and appreciation of biological and ecological science and their relevance to climate adaptation and resilience. Candidates must have a BS or MS degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Applicants for this position must have strong writing, and communication skills and should be familiar with relevant civil engineering and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWMM, HydroCAD, etc. Eight (8) plus years of experience, with experience and interest in hydraulics and river mechanics is a plus.

As a Senior Water Resources and Climate Resilience Engineer, you will play a key role in our efforts to develop and implement climate resilience strategies. You will work on a wide range of projects related to ecological restoration, green infrastructure, climate adaptation planning and design, and nature-based solutions in riverine, coastal, and urban environments.

Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Lead, plan, execute, and oversee all phases of green infrastructure, climate resilience and adaptation, and ecological restoration projects ensuring adherence to project scope, budget, and timeline
  • Contribute to water resources and resiliency projects from concept to completion
  • Convert resilience concepts into constructible design plans, support development of resilience vision and concepts
  • Conduct thorough site assessments, feasibility studies, and climate adaptation planning to inform project decision-making
  • Design and oversee the construction of water infrastructure projects like: Dam removal; Stream and wetland restoration; Floodplain restoration; Culvert replacement and right-sizing; Hydrologic & hydraulics studies; Coastal flood resilience and restoration; Green infrastructure; Municipal drainage studies and design
  • Evaluate and implement sustainable stormwater management and flood control solutions
  • Develop and monitor project schedules, budgets, and resources to ensure successful project delivery
  • Manage project documentation, including contracts, permits, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide technical expertise in climate resilience and adaptation strategies
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and clients to ensure project success
  • Prepare and review technical reports, proposals, and project documentation
  • Ensure all projects adhere to high standards of work through QA/QC processes
  • Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies to minimize disruptions in product delivery

Supervise and Mentor Developing Professionals

  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment that encourages professional growth and development among team members
  • Mentor developing professionals to guide their career development objectives
  • Review team's work and provide technical guidance on design approach and challenges
  • Recognize when technical or workflow problems are developing and initiate guidance for corrective actions

Support Business Development Activities

  • Lead development of technical approaches for proposals and technical aspects for project interviews conducted by clients
  • Develop proposal documentation including project scope, budgets, and design approach for projects of all sizes
  • Develop and grow positive relations with existing and prospective clients

Position Requirements

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Civil/Environmental/Water Resources Engineering or related background. Master's/PhD/or other advanced training and specialization welcome
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Typically requires 8+ years of experience developing design plans, preferably with specific experience in green infrastructure design, riverine and coastal engineering, and flood resilience.

Project Type Experience:

  • Familiarity and direct experience with state and federal funding programs
  • Familiarity with best practices of climate resilience, including the use of flood hazard data and risk mitigation strategies for riverine, coastal, and drainage-related flooding including working knowledge and direct experience of federal hazard mitigation and other climate adaptation funding programs
  • Relationships with and experience working with public sector clients
  • Hydrologic/Hydraulic modeling experience and familiarity with applying climate projections in design work
  • Experience and interest in hydraulics and river mechanics
  • Strong knowledge of and direct experience with environmental regulations and permitting processes in the Northeast
