Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides a different kind of healing to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Position Description:

The Senior Major Gift Officer is responsible for developing and executing strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of 150 major gifts prospects capable of making donations of $10,000 and above in a single year, or $50,000+ range payable over multiple years, with a special focus on comprehensive, multi-year gifts to support Camp's Annual Fund, special events, endowment, and special campaigns.

Our Senior Major Gift Officer can expect to

  • Build and manage a portfolio of 150 major gift doors and high wealth prospects who have the capacity to make, at minimum, blended, five-figure, multi-year commitments annually and five- to seven-figure gifts toward special projects.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Major and Planned Gifts, develop annual solicitation goals, with special consideration to the portfolio's top 50 prospects, and design and implement tailored strategies to achieve the goals.
  • Conduct 10-15 significant personal visits monthly with major donors and prospects, for the purpose of prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Make 35 personal solicitations annually with written proposals.
  • Review progress monthly with the Director of Major and Planned Gifts and quarterly with the Donor Relations manager.
  • In collaboration with Camp's prospect researcher and members of the development team, identify and qualify new major gift prospects as part of Camp's evolving fundraising strategy. Make recommendations to support a dynamic portfolio pipeline.
  • Engage pipeline prospects assigned annually with a minimum of quarterly contacts (phone, written communication, personalized invitations to Camp events, etc.)
  • Record actions in Raiser's Edge fundraising database on a timely and accurate basis, including the filing of contact reports and next actions, to ensure continuity and integrity of donor and prospect records.
  • Utilize annual special events and other Camp activities to strengthen/build relationships with prospects while cultivating existing relationships.
  • Coordinate and lead donor visits, Camp tours, receptions, experiences and other gatherings with donors and prospects in order to build and strengthen relationships, evaluate the philanthropic priorities and provide the appropriate case for support.
  • Prepare written proposals and other materials as needed to support cultivation and solicitation activities.
  • Request and complete pledge paperwork as necessary; provide oversight of pledge redemptions assigned to portfolio. Review the daily gift log (DGL) to ensure accuracy of gift entry for portfolio prospects.
  • Manage and inspire regional fundraising group (the Wild Bunch) to broaden engagement with support for Camp and synthesize alignment with Board priorities.
  • Maintain knowledge of general fundraising trends and best practices to inform ongoing fundraising efforts. Re-certify annually in Raiser's Edge NXT.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Major and Planned Gifts, create and execute an annual professional plan.
  • Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Our Senior Major Gift Officer should have...

  • A minimum of seven years of development experience including five years of frontline fundraising managing a portfolio of major donors and donor prospects.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp programs or other demonstrated commitment to providing services for children and families coping with serious illness is preferred.
  • The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Expert understanding of, and ability to execute on, a comprehensive moves management approach to fundraising.
  • The ability to work independently on several projects simultaneously, as well as work collaboratively with members of the development and broader Camp teams.
  • High attention to detail, organization and deadlines.
  • A high level of self-confidence, creativity, self-motivation and energy needed to undertake diverse responsibilities.
  • Experience with and willingness to use fundraising databases, such as The Raiser's Edge, for maximum effectiveness in the recording of all donor and prospect information.
  • A proficiency with Microsoft Office products and tools, including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.
  • The ability and willingness to travel out of region to meet with donors, including occasional overnight travel.
  • The ability to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, in support of development and Camp events.
  • A valid Driver's license and driving record meeting THITWGC insurance carrier requirements. Ability to travel to assigned worksites.
  • The ability to operate a computer for most of the workday with appropriate rest periods.
