Job Description

This role requires supporting customers with mechatronics products such as actuators, motors, encoders, sensors, and servo drives with advice, troubleshooting, or testing. Qualifications

Summary/Objective

This role requires supporting customers with mechatronics products such as actuators, motors, encoders, sensors, and servo drives with advice, troubleshooting, or testing. In addition, the role requires supporting internal product development, production and returned materials to ensure specifications are met or exceeded with the highest quality level using existing or developing proper test equipment or procedures. Must be a hands-on contributor with project management skills enabling supporting several tasks with different mechatronics products including those from third parties.

  • Electro-mechanical calculations, testing, and customer support for systems of varied complexity integrating industrial electro-mechanical system components including actuators, motors, gears, bearings, sensors, cable assemblies, connectors, servo drives, and controllers.
  • Support the development of products, components, specifications, and processes for complex electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Develop and document test equipment and procedures for electro-mechanical assemblies. Perform analysis, troubleshooting, and testing at the component and systems level for products in development as well as in production.
  • Develop software or script to automate testing processes.
  • Work with vendors to analyze products to potentially be integrated in new designs and to troubleshoot situations or advise new features or specification necessary for an application.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills enabling a clear and accurate understanding when communicating with sales as well as directly with customers or vendors.
  • Interact with customers to gain an understanding of the product requirements. Defines scope, plans, and deliverables for assigned work.
  • Follow and make recommendations to improve upon Harmonic Drive's processes and procedures.
  • Technical leadership and project management skills.
  • Mentor fellow engineers.
  • Participate in root cause investigations and analyses.
    Competencies
    • Strong electrical and/or mechanical experience in a manufacturing environment including integration and testing of electro-mechanical systems.
    • Strong electro-mechanical problem solving skills, with root cause analysis and design of experiments knowledge
    • Servo drive design, development, commissioning and troubleshooting experience for motion control systems. Experience with servo drives from Copley Controls, Elmo, Mitsubishi, Yaskawa, B&R, Allen Bradley, Siemens, Bosch Rexroth or Panasonic is a plus.
    • Experience with absolute and incremental encoders and associated communication protocols
    • Experience with brushless DC motors
    • Experience with electrical test equipment such as multimeters, power meters, oscilloscopes, etc.
    • Hands on experience in mechanical and electrical assembly including soldering and crimping is a plus.
    • Experience successfully managing projects with small teams of engineers with excellent organization, problem solving and time management skills.
    • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, ERP, etc.).
    • Experience with various types of automated machinery and robotics is a plus as well as experience with automation, robotics, and PC-based motion control software.
    • Networking experience including EtherCAT and CANopen a plus.
    • Experience with software tools, Simulink and MATLAB, to model system behavior a plus.
    • Programming skills such as with Python or LabVIEW is a plus.
    • Ability to develop PCBAs for various applications a plus.
    • Familiar with engineering documentation control practices.
    • Experience writing technical specifications, reports and project proposals.
    • Aerospace or medical equipment design experience a plus.
    • Strong, results-driven and self-directed individual with personal commitment to excellence.

    • Ability to work across teams and communicate clearly verbally and in writing with colleagues, customers, and partners in a professional and cooperative manner.
    • Willing to travel to customers' sites when necessary

      Work Environment
      This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers as well as electrical and environmental test equipment located in a dedicated laboratory

      Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
      This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

      Travel

      Travel domestically and internationally, when required, up to 10% of the time.

      Required Education and Experience
      • BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Master's degree strongly preferred.
      • 5+ years of related engineering experience.
