Overview:

Position Summary:

Nusano has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Safety Engineer with extensive experience in designing and managing complex high-tech systems with radiological or medical implications. Nusano is developing a state-of-the-art, high-current particle accelerator and radioisotope production facility in West Valley City, Utah. The medical radioisotopes developed at this facility will enable next-generation cancer diagnostics, drugs, and treatments. The Senior Safety Engineer will work directly with project design teams to assure that the designed system and facility meet stringent safety standards for the operators, scientists, visitors, and the community. This team member will use best practices to perform safety analysis, consider design tradeoffs, and provide subject-matter expertise in influencing the designs. The Senior Safety Engineer will serve as liaison between the design teams, the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), and the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) team to guide the projects to successful completion and certification.

Responsibilities:

What You'll Do:

  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers
  • Work closely with functional design teams to capture, decompose, trace, and manage safety-related stakeholder needs and technical requirements
  • Contribute to the development of technical specifications, interface control documents, and verification & validation test plans necessary for required safety
  • Promote a high level of safety consciousness in the design teams
  • Perform analysis on systems, subsystems, and components using best-practice safety tools such as hazard analysis, risk analysis, failure mode & effects analysis (FMEA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Use simulation and CAD to model accident scenarios and possible safety hazards
  • Use simulation and CAD to model radiological effects and recommend shielding levels
  • Assist in the design of a Personnel Protection System (PPS) and a Radiation Monitoring System
  • Establish and maintain company standards for hazard analysis, safety, and regulatory compliance, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet these standards
  • Offer input to designs to improve safety, usability, and mistake-proofing
  • Work with the RSO and the ES&H team to assure final designs meet the required standards
  • Participate in design reviews and represent the interests of safety
  • Contribute to the creation of installation procedures, commissioning plans, operations manuals, work instructions, and other documentation
  • Mentor and train team members on safety best practices
Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field
  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Experience in safety engineering, radiological hazards, particle accelerators, or nuclear systems (5+ years)
  • Experience working with safety or quality regulations such as Good Manufacturing Practices for pharmaceuticals (ICH Q7, 21 CFR 211, 21 CFR 212) or OSHA standards for ionizing radiation (29 CFR 1910.1096)
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices for hazard management and safety assurance
  • Fully proficient with digital productivity tools (Microsoft Office products)
  • Strong attention to detail, technical proficiency, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Proficiency with root cause analysis, FMEA, and safety/risk assessment

Preferred Requirements:

  • Masters Degree or higher in Safety Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, RF Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field
  • Experience with Requirements Management, PLM, ERP, or QMS tools
  • Experience with creating and running V&V test plans for safety requirements
  • Extensive experience with FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, and similar tools
  • Knowledge of particle accelerators or similar technology
  • Experience with hot cells, glove boxes, and other radioactive material handling
  • Experience with chemical separation equipment such as ion exchange chromatography
  • Experience in the production of pharmaceuticals or medical grade products
  • Leadership experience
  • CSP credential, electrical safety experience (NFPA 70E, LOTO, etc.)

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working in a facility that produces radiation.
  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment and the production facility.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse and manual dexterity
