How You'll Contribute to the Team:

The Director, Risk, Compliance & Safety - HE is responsible for implementing a coherent and unified strategy to develop and continuously improve the Safety and Compliance program across geographically dispersed student housing partnerships. This role is responsible for providing support and oversight to the teams charged with day-to-day safety execution and is accountable for all aspects of safety, compliance, and risk mitigation and risk management support. This role will be part of the Higher Education business line.

While the role is remote, we currently only hire selected candidates from the following states: AL, FL, GA, IN, KS, LA, MA, MD, MI, NC, OK, RI, TN, TX.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead the Corvias culture, mission, vision, and values, and instill a "Culture of Safety" leading the design and implementation of Safety and Compliance programs including policies, practices, education, training, and compliance for the Higher Education business sector.
  • Responsible for environmental compliance and risk management for a geographically dispersed student housing portfolio.
  • Identify applicable environmental regulations and risks. Partner with Property Management Operations, Risk Management, Legal and Corporate to implement acceptable systems in order to ensure compliance and conformance.
  • Distill discussions and thoughts from meetings into next steps, tangible follow-up planning, and timely completion of action items.
  • Drive the planning process to completion in partnership with higher ed leadership and relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain day-to-day operational awareness of each assigned location and regularly travel among sites to maintain a leadership presence and hands-on support as needed.
  • Conduct routine on-site safety inspections and develop strategies for improving operational efficiencies, employee adherence and risk mitigation.
  • Drive operational consistency across locations through the development, implementation, and refinement of EHS standard operating procedures.
  • Work with the University's personnel to create a positive working relationship regarding EH&S policies and procedures and related matters. Assist University personnel in understanding Corvias EH&S plans.
  • Lead regular safety meetings and trainings at each partnership. Conduct organizational need assessments and identify skill and knowledge gaps where additional training is needed.
  • Oversee and establish guidelines governing the collection and maintenance of employee training records, health/safety manuals or handbooks, incident/accident reports, or other documentation.
  • Audit facilities or processes to identify weaknesses or risks and proactively develop and implement corrective action plans.
  • Support the engagement and performance of APPA inspections and develop work plans to ensure compliance and remedy deficiencies identified during APPA inspections.
  • Work directly with portfolio leadership to develop and follow through on action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, or local statutes or regulations including OSHA. Represent the company before local, state, and federal agencies, as required.
  • Analyze EHS metrics and establish annual action plans to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Conduct regular EHS management reviews with partner leadership.
  • Model the highest standards of business professionalism; lead the training and development of team members through coaching, motivating, and mentoring on company culture, business goals, financial management, and sound business judgment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Role Specific Requirements Include:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent industry experience.
  • 12+ years' experience in supervising safety and compliance programs of large university related buildings or similar experience in same or greater size, scope, and complexity of both new and aged buildings.
  • Must have a technical understanding and experience with fire suppression systems.
  • Advanced expertise and experience with EPA, OSHA, and comparable regulations. AHERA, EPA LBP certification, HAZWASTE and mold experience preferred.
  • CSP, ASP, CHST or OHST preferred.
  • Must be familiar with elevator operations and compliance.
  • Must have a working familiarity with CMIS and RIMIS Systems.
  • Demonstrable technical skills with the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an engaging and easily understood manner.
  • Proven ability to develop, inspire, and manage high-performing and high-impact teams, including remote employees and external consultants; ability to influence without hierarchical authority.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and work collaboratively across all functions and all levels of the organization.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to effectively resolve unforeseen project conditions and schedule impacts amid tight timelines and high client expectations.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to see projects through to completion.
  • Computer proficiency and working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to travel up to 80% of the time.
